Snakes eat dog food?

I think the OP meant to say that the dog food attracts rodents, which are a food source for the snakes.

Heh, we had one crawl into the house the other day. We're in an earth home located in a heavily wooded area, so it's easy for all sorts of little creatures to get in. I wondered what the dogs were so interested in under the dining room table. Thankfully it was a little guy, so I relocated him out to our garden.

I've never seen this type of snake before, he was small, no stripes, dark reddish-brown in color. From looking online I suspect that he (she?) was a Northern Brown Snake. I guess they do bite when threatened, but their bite is not dangerous. Hopefully he'll be gobbling up the little buggies and mice out in our yard!

We had one get in the basement last week. Unfortunately he got stuck on one of the glue traps I have placed on that side of the basement (I use the traps to catch crickets and spiders that make their way in). Found him late one evening so I threw the trap outside...when I checked on it the next day in day light I could not find the trap or the snake. I guess something liked him more than I !

No, it's the right to shoot PEOPLE (who break into our homes, etc.).

Mothballs DO work for snakes, BTW.

So after you kill all the snakes, who's gonna eat the mice? I had my dogs at a kennel for a while. Good kennel, best around by all accounts. They'd been put there while I was in the hospital and when I got out, I went to check on them. The guy was telling me how they'd put up "snake fencing" that year as we walked up.

Then a few minutes later, I found out that they were having massive problems with mice... invading the dog runs and being hunted by the dogs. While I'm sure my two enjoyed the activity, there are some health issues to consider and they seemed kinda bewildered as to why this was happening "this year." Gee, I wonder! They needed to import a few kings and gopher snakes, and leave them to keep the mice in check, while keeping the rattlers out.

Then again, I've found that with the people I know in Texas, lack of education about snakes and their role in the environment, as well as which ones are and are not dangerous, drives what appears to be mindless, near hysterical fear and hostility. (Knew an old man that blew holes in his wall trying to kill what apparently was a recognizably non-poisonous snake!) Your neighbor apparently does not suffer from this, and it is highly likely that the only side effect will be that he raises a child who looks before he steps. Oh, well. If you don't want any of those vicious snakes on your property, by all means put up a snake fence... just don't be too surprised if you're overrun by rodents a few months later.

I also do not like the slithering creatures. The only good Snake is on the side of a Colt Revolver.
