Just how difficult is it to change a 3.73 in a 2005, 2500, 4x4, 8.1 Suburban rear end to a 4.10, is it costly? Can anybody recommend a good shop to this. Thanks for any info.

Typically around $1400 to $1500 per axle. You have two.
You have an 8.1L 3/4 ton so my question would be - WHY?

For greater towing power for us. We have a 6.8l V10 3/4 ton and it didn't have the power we wanted. We are not speeders but ample power is needed for towing up and down hills. Our next option was to trad in for a diesel but we didn't want to go that expense route so we upgraded instead.
We just changed our 3.73 in our F240 4x4 to a 4.3. We took it to a highly recommended drive train shop here and we were going to change it to 4.1, which he said would work but we would be better off and notice the towing power of a 4.3, so that's what we did. We also changed out the differential cover to a larger one to have more fluid for cooling and we put in sythetic. It cost us overall about $2400. Ford will do the same for you for about the same amount of money, which we found out later. If you have a 4x4 both drivetrains have to be changed or it will bind when you use 4x4. He also recommended adjusting the Positrac so it wouldn't slip. The break in period requires heat adjustment (stopping every 70 - 80 miles and letting it cool for 20 minutes - and no towing till this has been done) We will be towing with this change this next coming week and are excited to test it out.

My understanding is it is better suited to tow heavier loads. Planning on towing a 31' triple axle approx. 10000 full.

That's why we upgraded. We tow the weight you mention in a 32' TT. Sorry, I can't recommend someone in your area. We found ours through a recommendation from another mechanic we know. Start asking your mechanics or talk to the dealership where you bought your TV.

Did the change out on my 02 1500hd 4x4. I ordered the gears online and had a local dealer do the install. Right at 1500 total cost.
Sure made a big difference towing.

Drago, last time I had this done several years ago, it ran about $1200, but that was for one axle on a 2-wheel drive. I figured that now it would run around $1500, like mikehart92 paid.
BTW, in the Chevy towing guide, your big 4X4 wagon is rated at 10,100 lbs. with an 8.1L & 3:73 axle ratio, and 12000 with an 8.1L & 4:10.

Drago has a 4X4. He'll have to make the change to both drivetrains.
