Hi folks. Plan on driving from Yakima, Wa to Bend, OR on Hwy 97. Was told today that highway 97 is going to be closed down south of hwy 84 for three months only the person didn't know when it goes into effect. Anybody current on that info? Thanks in advance, Jack

Are you sure that you don't mean north of I-84? The site indicates that it is the bridge across the Columbia River that will be affected. The reason I ask is that we will be going north on 97 to Biggs and then east on I-84 soon.

Take 97 out of Yakima to SR 14 at Maryhill. Head west on 14 (about 20 miles)to 197and cross the bridge at The Dalles. 197 will ultimately merge with
97 and on into Bend.
Won't extend your trip by that much but, do stay alert on 14 -- it'll be busy, busy, busy. During the last closure five truckers and several cars crashed and burned on the twisty-turnies near the town of Wishram on 14 (no serious injuries, just people not accustomed to the road in a "big" hurry.
And, Sandi, you'll be uneffected only the Bridge at Biggs will be closed!

Sure thank all of you for the advice. Will be extra careful and hope I don't hold up much traffic.

Both US 97 and US 197 feature narrow stretches punctuated by occasional passing lanes between the Columbia River and their convergence north of Willowdale. US 197 also features steep grades and a narrow crossing of the Deschutes River at Maupin. However, this is nothing to worry about....just take it easy and you'll zip through just fine.
