I was a vet tech for 10 years. The damage it can do to dogs when they go flying out of a truck isn't pretty. Think of a biker hitting the pavement at 50 miles an hour. Sometimes it's from a wreck. Sometimes the dog jumps out because they see something they just have to check out. It is definitely a danger to other drivers regardless of how the dog ends up in the road.

I saw a truck towing a fiver with a large dog in the box under the fifth wheel. the dog was sticking his head out the side between the box rails and the trailer. They were pulling into a field to park for a weekend Rodeo. as the ground was very uneven the trailer and box rail came very close at times. It is very fortunate that the dog didn't have his head out at these times, or it would have been a very sad situation. When we travel our dogs are in their crates and are more comfortable there. On occasion I have taken them without the crates and they are very antsy and nervous.
