I was thinking what would I do if I was on a several week long vacation and a pet died. Would you find a nice place and bury it? Take it to a local vet and it cremated or disposed of? Cut your trip short and take it home and bury it at home? hoping it wouldn't smell too bad when you got there.
This should be interesting for responses.

Depends on the size of the pet. Last summer while we were crossing the country for 8wks we had DD15s 6 gerbils with us. While we were in the Grand Tetons one of them kicked the bucket. DD woudn't hear of burying the critter--"it might get eaten!" lots of tears. So what does a good mom do? I wrapped it up and stuck it in the freezer until we got home 4 wks later.

You might not want to eat anything at my trailer.

It has happened to us. Like others, our Maggie was cremated. We carry her ashes with us, and everywhere we visit where she also had been in the past, we spread a bit of her ashes. We're about done with that, I guess. The rest of them will be mixed with ours when we die.

Overly sentimental? Maybe - but that dog went to sleep every night for 13 years with her muzzle on my shoulder. You don't get over that easily.

We had our Gabby take sick in Denver, a local vet hospital was wonderful and gave her the best care we could have received. After 10 days of being hopeful, she took a turn for the worse and we made the decision to have her put down. We are from Canada, but she was cremated and returned home UPS to our vet clinic. I too cried for days, but am grateful for the support we received from the vet clinic and from the people at the campground we were staying at.

It's not over sentimental in my book.

I would have my pet cremated and returned home and would cry the whole rest of my trip. If I came across an injured animal I would not leave it to die I would do everything humanely possible to get help to have it taken to a vet and euthanized if they could not find an owner. I would pay for it myself. I cant leave anything suffer.

I doubt most would even consider the legal aspect, I know that would be the last thing I would think about.

If we're on vacation, though sad as it is, I wouldn't cut the vacation short nor would I "hold onto it" till we got home.

We would be too upset to continue a vacation if we lost one of our fur kids. Our pets are family to us and we love them.
We would do what roaddogs did if this should happen.

This summer we had to PTS a 15.5 year old while we were on the road. We were fortunate to be where his original owner lives and they have a trusted vet (we’ve used this vet in the past for hip evaluations). He was cremated.
