When we were fulltiming our Sugar was not doing well. I knew I might be faced with situation. Fortunately, when we were in our hometown she did pass away and we buried her in the pet cemetary with all of our other beloved pets. I know God answered my prayers because I knew I would have a hard time just leaving her at a vets office. We had 2 others that after extended trips, both passed on after being home for about a month. I have thought about this and until the situation actually comes up, I'm not sure how I would handle it.

This doesn't answer the question but it is an interesting story.

Several years ago our daily UPS driver came into our office looking green around the gills. He wanted to use the phone to call his supervisor. There was a horrible smell in his truck and nasty liquid leaking from one of the boxes. He was told to return to the terminal and switch trucks. The next day he told me that UPS had contacted the shipper and was told that their little dog passed while they were on vacation. They just put him in a box and shipped him home for burial. I was amazed that anyone would do that!

Our little schnauzer became ill in Las Vegas of all places. We were referred to a WONDERFUL vet clinic not far from Circus Circus where we were parked. They tried and tried to help unitl we found out, via many tests and five days of worry, that she was in liver failure. We had no choice but to put her down. Vet had offered to show us how to keep her hyrdated to bring her home but she was suffering and the ending of the story would have been the same. So, amidst many tears, signed the euthanasia order, had her cremated and met her at home. Thank goodness for compassionate caregivers there who gave her every chance to get better.

Had never given a thought to what to do as she was still quite young. They guided us and assisted us through the tough times. Somehow, wherever you are, someone will help you if it is needed.

I would have my pet cremated and returned home and would cry the whole rest of my trip. If I came across an injured animal I would not leave it to die I would do everything humanely possible to get help to have it taken to a vet and euthanized if they could not find an owner. I would pay for it myself. I cant leave anything suffer.

Me too.

This thread is so sad. I send a huge cyber hug to each of you who has lost a much loved furbaby. They will always have a special place in our hearts.

Sadly, I had this happen about three years ago. Dogs were at home with a sitter looking in on them twice a day. We were in NYC. Two days before we were due to come home, the sitter calls us and says that Zack is in bad shape. We had known this was coming, but I couldn't bring myself to order the sitter (16 years old, close family friend) to do our dirty work. I stayed on the phone while she got him to eat a few bites, then resigned myself to putting him down when we returned two days later. Late in the afternoon the next day we got the awful phone call while I was in the checkout line at Macy's. He was gone, and we were 2500 miles away. I cried all the way back to our hotel. Unable to bring myself to ask the sitter to take care of his final disposition, I called my sister, and she and BIL took care of his final arrangements for us.

Interesting question. Would I want to spend the money on all the arrangements or pay alimony to DW. I choose adequate arrangements for the little guy.
