A ~16 foot crocodile grapped a dog in the La Manzanilla, Mexico lagoon last year, and was beaten off by beach-goers swinging plastic lawn chairs. Dog is called "Lucky" now. It has healed up well, and it's a lot more careful about where it laps up a drink.
I had a similar crocodile swim into the lagoon this year, see me and came over to face me about 12 feet away, and 3 feet below me. We stared at each other for about 10 minutes, with him looking at me like I could "make" his December. I had a lot of confidence in the palm tree I was leaning against.

I think how we might respond would be pure instinct and if we stopped to consider our own safety, the pup would be history. I'd rather be a bit paranoid and not let my dog swim anywhere questionable. Of course, this would exclude most of the state of Florida.

there is nothing like the internet to make a sissy a he-man. Myself I would have jumped in there and killed that shark, swam out killed a few more for spite. then walked on water back to shore.

I see Diego as if he was my own flesh and blood.
And I treat him just like he is too.
Not a doubt at all that I would have been clobbering the heck out of that shark, and if possible, killing it, by any means necessary.

While I agree that I probably wouldn't let my dogs swim where there were sharks in the first place - yes, I would have rescued my dog in a heart beat.

Not behind that pair, that's for sure!
When I was dealing with er... "tough" situations, hiding wasn't really an option. Failure to jump into a fight on the street may get you hurt or killed during, and will certainly get you hurt after, when you face your peers and your department. Although I HAVE been known to indicate a very large partner behind me and say something like "you can deal with me, or deal with him, what would you prefer?"
