they are talking about the Ca. fruit inspections station ( the hwy runs right thru the station you can't avoid it , the same way with the Border Patrol station that can be 60 or more miles from the Border

Went through the one on 101 at California/Oregon border yesterday and was asked about fruit and veggies on board and advised we purchased all at Safeway in Florence, Oregon the day before.

True. In fact, there's no way you can avoid going through an agricultural inspection station since they have the road narrowed down and there's no way to bypass it.
We ran into one coming from Nevada on US-6 last month. The inspector saw our SD license plates and asked if we'd just come from there. When we told her, no, we'd spent the entire summer in WA, OR, and most recently, NV, she waived us on. I imagine if our answer had been "yes" to her question, more questions about what we were carrying in the way of fruit and vegetables would have followed.
After many years of not being staffed, the agricultural inspection station on I-10 at the AZ/CA border is now open.
