Does anyone have a proven method to calm a large dog who becomes hyper as soon as the diesel engine starts in the RV?? She loves to ride and will jump into the truck and sit there and watch the world go by, but not in the motorhome. It's not the diesel engine, as our other truck is a PSD and that does not bother her. Also, this is the only home she has ever known, as we are full timers.

Can she see out of the motorhome and watch the ground and the horizon as you drive? Or does she see only sky and trees.
Motion sickness comes quick when you can't reference the horizon for some.

Drugs - Acepromizine (might not be spelled right) - are one way. Nice thing about Ace is you can start with a very small dose and work up. Not recommended for dogs prone to seizures. Your vet can help with that.

I have one that would not stop barking soon as she figured out she was going in the car. Took awhile, but I took her out to the gate with her collar on and sat down until she calmed down - took an hour. Then got closer to the car, sat down again. About the third or fourth time I sat down, she started getting the message. Only bad part is she did not remember it the next time. She is better now, still gets a bit excited but not like before. If she gets out of hand, I sit down and wait. Takes time and patience... if you ever get to south Florida, I know a great behavorist. Take him about an hour to tell how to fix it - amazing man.

Your not alone here. Our Jack Russell loves to ride in the car or pick-up with no problems. Put her in MH and after a few minutes of travel she is a mess. No problem when sitting still. Tried most everything. Finally, we gave up and the wife follows me in the car all the way to Fl. from OH. I do not want to tranquilize her as the trip takes us 4 days and 4 days on tranquilizers cannot be good. So we just live with it.

I travelled with a German Shorthair that was a bit hyper, jumped on the dash when we left the RV for any length of time, ect.

It helped to take her for a run, once tired, she would sleep for a couple of hours.

And you need one of these to make her tired. It is actually very easy for one dog to pull on paved surfaces, and a lot of fun.

SaccoDogCarts

They are inported into America by this company.

While the Sacco dog cart is not the lowest cost, it does have brakes, handy with wild dogs, and you said hyper! So if you see a cat while out carting, there will be hope for you. Well I guess YOU don't have to see the cat, but if the hyper dog sees it! . . .

My 60 pound german shorthair could pull the cart at 13 miles per hour for about 2 miles, she was about 2 when I got her from the pound, 6 when I got the cart, and 11 when I lost her. She loved pulling the cart the whole time. When she saw a cat, the speed increased to about 20, according to the speedometer on the cart.

I built a rack that fits into the receiver of my hitch, to carry the cart. It works out well. I added two extra receivers to my hitch, one on the drivers side for the cart, one on the passenger side for a bike rack, and I can still tow from the factory middle one.

I am of the opinion that nearly all dog behavior issues can be resolved by more excercise. Either fast walks, jogging if you can or even a bike rig. 45 minutes of retrieving. Something. Anything.

Also try 3-4 drops of Bach's Rescue Remedy available at most health food stores.

And/or 2-4 benydryl. Harmless and calming.

Conditioning might help. Take some naps or spend some playtime (with treats) in the RV before trips so the dog associates good times with the RV.

What is it and how does it work??

2-4 what of benadryl??

No trips, the RV is her home. She is 2 1/2 years old and has never had another home. She loves the RV, just not the motion. She has never had motion sickness.

Here are a couple of links about Rescue Remedy:

RR @ Pet Education.com

RR @ Natural Canine.com

You can buy it either online or at some of the larger pet supply stores. I've heard many wonderful reports on how well it works. It is certainly worth a try!

Good luck!

You would work on conditioning with the engine ON, since the dog is apparently already comfortable with the rv, just not the sound/vibrations of the engine. Same basic process, you just can more or less skip the normal first part. Or maybe not, you might want to teach "jump in jump out" with the engine off, and then try it with it on.

That assumes you have anxiety, though, and not excitement, which is a whole different deal to train for. What exactly do you mean by "becomes hyper?" As in, exactly what is the dog's behavior and demeanor?

What I want to know is, when are they going to start selling Comfort Zone for HUMANS????? 'Cause some days...
