I just looked on the bottom of a can I have. Best used by April 2001.
I vote spam only because of the convenience, cooked or not.

try making ham salad out of it. Its great. Cube the can of spam, put in food processor, throw in pickle relish and onions. Give a few twirls of the processor. Add miracle whip and a dash of hot sauce or worcestshire sauce and your done. Serve on crackers as a snack or put on a sandwich with all the trimmings..Same thing can be done with a can of salmon(drain first). Dona

Love fried scrapple, hate Spam. Can't even stand to smell it cooking. Sorry, but it's the only food I've forbidden to be cooked if I'm in the house. Stan cooks it when I'm out or away for a few days. In fact I think he lives on it when I take off for the week. He loves it. Lindy

The best part of using Spam is making up the names - then the recipes to go with them. For example Spash, Pig Newtons, Spamichangas, Spushi, etc.
For example, Pig Newtons are fun if you have an oven. Take Spam and cut it into pieces the same size as the filling in Fig Newtons, wrap them in Pillsbury Crescent roll dough, then bake following the temperature suggestions on the Pillsbury container.
Spash is Spam Hash - one can of Spam, one onion, one stick of celery, one potato, one carrot. Chop the vegetables fine and cook long and slow in a cast iron frying pan.
We would never go sailing or camping without at least one can of Spam.

No, but it does sound good. I usually fry spam and serve with eggs and potatos.

While I don't eat much Spam, I do like it!
On a lark, and to completely be a smart aleck (sp?), I devised a Spam Chowder and entered it in a Chowder cook-off, winning first place! Naturally, I didn't tell anyone what it was until after the award ceremony!
The thing I learned was that Spam lends itself VERY well to food that require diced ham, such as split pea/bean soups! It doesn't get "dry" and tough like ham will in the soups.
So, next time you're tossing together a batch of bean/pea soup, try Spam instead, you'll love results!
(NOTE: Of course, I'm assuming you already have a ham stock...)
She ain't purdy, but at least she's slow!

79powerwagaon, you just answered the question I was going to ask here after reading all the responses. Since I don't always have leftover ham, I was wondering if you could use it in making soups. Thanks for your post! I'll give it a try! Maybe it'll be even better than the ham?

For me its hard to compare them, I like both, but for camping there are few things that are as versatile as Spam.
We always have a can on standby.
