97 is a great road - as it is used by truckers... so there is a lot of truck traffic. If you are leaving right away, watch the weather - it is already snowing in the mountains of Oregon. We are heading south on I-5 Sunday... it is a pretty drive, but I also tire of the route. Have a safe trip.

Why not head over I90 and down to yakima and south all the way on 97 through Bend etc. Good roads (except maybe or current weather system).

Actually, we have a 8 yr old grand daughter soccer game tomorrow in Seattle. Then we'll head out Mon or Tues for Lake Tahoe to Trick or Treat with our 3 yr. old grand daughter. Then off to Casa Grande, AZ where we just had a place built (been in it for less than a month). We've been fulltime for 5 years. Need to get the new digs ready for Thanksgiving, all the kids are coming.
Been looking for different routes to take. Hwy 58 or Yakima ?? may have to flip a coin. The weather looks good all next week from Seattle to Tahoe on 97 and 395.
Thanks for the tips.

Actually I think the bridge is already closed for the winter to finish the repairs. Best solution, I5 to Portland, I84 East to Troutdale, South on major surface streets and get on US26 to Madras and then pick up US97 South to Weed CA. Perfect time of year to drive 97. Not as much traffic as in the summer, good roads, but you must watch for deer and cross traffic.

58 from Eugene to 97 is a fine road. We just towed that route over to Bend and back a week ago. There are a couple gas stations before Oakridge on 58 when you get off of Hwy 5. There are some passing lanes on 58, pretty drive. This morning there is snow on the side of the road in Williamette Pass on 58...just check the weather.

97 into Klamath Falls and beyond is a good road too. There is gas is Chemult.

I believe Donn is correct about the bridge being closed at the Oregon/Washington border on 97. I was just in Bend and saw a reader board on the north bound lane of 97 stating the crossing was closed. Hwy 58 is a great road and by Mon or Tue us should be fine for traveling.

The post on Hwy.58 are right good 2 lane road with passing lanes and it is a truck route so no problems. The weather is clearing up today so snow should not be a problem either. At Klamath Falls you can take 39/139 thru Tulelake to Canby east 299 18 miles to Alturas south 395 to Standish south A3 9 miles back to 395 this will save you 18 miles south to Reno then take your pick of roads to your Tahoe location. All good 2 lane roads. Places we have stayed this route Klamath Falls KOA. If you do take the route Hwy. 26 out of Portland/Troutdale/Fairview to 97 at Madras and 97 south it is a pretty drive and also a good 2 lane road but a little further and at Warm Springs there is a pretty good down and up grade in and out of the river area about 4 or 5 miles up going east. Have fun

Thanks for the tips. The bridge is closed so I'll stick with 58 then down through Alturas. There are Flying Js both ways ( 90 or I 5).
Thanks again.
