Hi Folks! New to RV'ing so pardon what is bound to be a series of rediculous questions......
There is a RV show coming up next weekend in Austin, TX. That's a good 4 hour drive for us. We are pretty sure we are going to buy a used 5th wheel (spend on the order of $70K) but we hear that you can get a really good deal at these shows for a new rig.
What do you think - ever hear of anyone getting a really good deal at an RV show? Considering the economy, seems that the really big dealers would be ready to DEAL to off load inventory.
We'll probably go to the show just for the heck of it but I thought I'd ask the question anyways... and we will see ya

The deal is not going to be better there. The way to buy is find the floor plan you want and then shop on the internet by e-mailing the various dealers of the brand you want. Tell them all the extras to include and the colors. Tell them you are getting bids from many dealers. Then compare and see what they offer you. Usualy in todays market you can get 35% off MSRP on new and more off a new year old. It won't be worth the trip and there is a big cold front coming through anyway.

IMHO, probably not. Seems the dealers are not going to these shows like they were in the past. It is expensive for them to rent space plus transporting RVs to/from, personnel, etc. And, truly, I don't think you get any special deals there. And, they usually only bring the new models. I would recommend doing your research from home and find what you want.

I was at the California RV show yesterday and they're pretty aggressive on pricing, even the known shiesters of the business. I overheard a couple sales folks complaining that they had never seen discounting so steep at that show.
As far as your 5th: If you intend to spend $70k on a used unit, I suspect you can buy just about anything you want all the way up to the top -of-the-line $150k+ models one or two years old. Might take a semi-tractor to haul it tho..

If you can spend 70K for a 5er, if your TV will handle it, you can buy some mighty nice units new ones, not used.

The shows are nice in that you can see different floor plans and models. Then research manufacturers and warranties. Then shop, shop, shop, on line, in person, over the telephone. The trick seems to be knowing exactly what you want and are willing to pay. Don't compromise in this market. Make 'them' come to you on price if they want to sell their unit. You get the best deals after the shows have closed and what hasn't sold on the floor.

Many of those top end manufacturers are now out of business, so no warranty.
But, a nice Titanium or such would still be a good used rig.
They are big, and very heavy, but real nice.
Me, I would research what truck I am willing to buy or tow with, then deal with weight issues, then start shopping for floor plans.
I shopped nationally, and bought 700 miles away in Nevada.
Took two years to find what I wanted, and to convince myself to do it.
