The DW wants to stay in a Motel/hotel over Xmas and commute by public transit into downtown NYcity every day, does any one have any idea where a good location would be that would be outside the main part of the city but within half an hour or so to downtown via bus or subway?
Reason for staying outside the central core is we are both petrified of driving in a city of this size.

We stayed in Secaucus, NJ at the Embassy Suites. The Hotel had free breakfast, two free happy hour drinks, free parking, laundry and swimming pool. There is a mall nearby and several resturaunts within walking distance. It also has a bus stop right accross the street that will take you the seven miles through the Lincoln Tunnel right to the Port Authority bus terminal and subway access to just about any place you wat to go. It worked great for us and the locals were very helpful to help point us in the right direction an how to use the various types of ticket machines. Bring lots of small bills for the machines. If you plan on five, six or more subway stops in a day, a all day pass is a good option and we gave ours away at the end of the day to who ever was buying tickets.
You do not need to be scared about driving in Manhatten but it is not the the best way for sight see'rs to get around at all. We saw many $100,000 plus vehicles all over the place but they can afford the outragous parking expenses.

Ditto on the Secaucus area. There are about 10 or so hotels/motels in and around that area due to it's proximity to the sports complex.
The main road out of Secaucus heads right into the city via the Lincoln tunnel which comes out in Mid-Lower Manhattan.
The busses all go to the immediate area of Grand Central Station.
From there you can go just about any where you want via bus or subway.
Manhattan or any of the Burroughs are no place for a total stranger to be driving. Take a wrong turn, wind up in the wrong part of town, have a flat or have to stop and leave your vehicle, you'll come back to a stripped out shell. I've seen it many times.
Just be extremely careful about getting into a New York cab, unless you know "exactly" where you're going and where it's located.
The New York cabbies love to take out-of-towners for a spin and an extra $50 or so.
I was based in the NYC area for about five years during the Berkeley flower children days. Man on Man what a trip for an East Texas country boy that couldn't spell New York City, let alone know about the life style.
Go and enjoy, it's a lifetime experience, if you've never been before.

You gotta get back here. Manhattan is a spectacular place to visit, and it's a very safe city. Disney basically owns Times Square.
I'd pick a place to stay that will allow you to take a train into Manhattan so you don't have to deal with traffic on buses.
Enjoy your trip. Great time of year. We have an overnighter booked in December.

Jambo,
Go to Priceline.com Fill in Secaucus, NJ and look at the prices. Then go to "name your own price". Choose a star rating, (I usually choose 2 1/2 or 3) Start with $50 a night. You probably won't get anything but they might give you a hint how much you should fill in. You can keep raising the price you will pay until you get something. Priceline prices are refundable but "name your own price" isn't. I have been very successful in getting wonderful accomodations for 1/3 to 1/4 the regular price in several states. Book another hotel which is 100% refundable now and try Priceline about 5 days before you go. Hotels look at their bookings for the following week and give their excess rooms to Priceline.
(NYC is a lot nicer and safer than when grey eagle went there but you still have to be street smart.)

Secaucus is one idea, but what we do when we take similar trips is to park in either Poughkeepsie or Croton-Harmon and take the train into the city, then stay in a Manhattan hotel. It will be a bit more expensive, but it will give a "base" to go back to when you are tired, and then you will really be able to enjoy the dining, the nightlife, and maybe take in a show, without having to worry about getting a train back out of the city each evening.

There's a parking garage at the Poughkeepsie Station that you can leave a vehicle in. At Croton-Harmon, there's a big lot that you can pre-pay for overnight parking. It's been my experience that both are well patrolled, and both seemed very reasonably priced. There's also a gargage at the Albany-Rensselaer Station, but from there, you can only get Amtrak into NYC. From Poughkeepsie and Croton-Harmon, you have a choice of Metro North trains, as well as Amtrack, so you get a choice of going to Penn Station or to Grand Central Station. Amtrack goes to Penn only, while Metro North goes to Grand Central.
If you are traveling from Montreal to NYC, the Amtrak Adirondack offers direct service from Montreal to Penn Station. It takes a bit longer than driving, but you dont have to worry about parking anywhere (except in your home-city!), no intermediate trains, plus you have the convenience of NOT driving. The Adirodack is a BEAUTIFUL ride, and with the price of gasoline nowadays, the $120 round trip is worth considering...
