Ran into two CHP officers (the guys who drive the Dodge pickup trucks) at lunch today.
So I asked them if when they pull a TH over are they checking to see if the driver has the correct license. In a nut shell they said it is a very big initiative and is indeed fact.
These guys said the CHP is very aware there is a serious problem and blamed lax enforcement for part of it. Both officers said look for there to be DUI check points on major roads in and out of the heavy use off road areas during the coming holiday. One thing they will be checking is that people have the correct license after they check your breath.

To answer the obvious question, here is the CA RV & Trailer Handbook. Says the class A non-commercial is required to tow a TT over 10,000# or a FW over 15,000#.

I was just talking to my buddy about this last night, his brother is a cop in Visalia and he was told by a CHP that pulled him over to get his Non-Commercial Class A. CHP is now looking at this on all the big trailers and will check to see if you have the correct license classification. As I recall he said it was a very large fine and they can choose to not let you go unless you have someone with the correct classification to drive.

That's incredible! What will California think of next. I suppose their next great idea will be to make all out of state drivers acquire a CA. license before entering the state.

This topic has been talked about numerous times. Yes they check and yes it's a large fine. I pull a Raptor 3612 and it's GVWR is 15,500 pounds which means I had to get my Non Comm class A which was a pain in the A$$ but I did it.
I must say if your pulling over 15000 pounds it's probably a good idea you have more than just a basic License. I know most of you on the board know what your doing, it's the other 97% that scare the hell out of me.

Been discussed a lot on here- I was just surprised to hear the two officers were not only aware of the issue but that it was an initiative.
I suspect we will hear stories of people getting tickets over T-DAY for not having the correct license. I should have asked- If you get a ticket half way to Glamis do you get to finish your trip or do you have to turn around and go home? That is- if they don't park you.

In California they still need reasonable cause to stop you.

Below is from my earlier post, it still applies. Get the license, get insured, and forget the weight and/or the PC for the stop. Its the law and you can avoid it by getting a ligther GW trailer or moving to another State.
Prior posting:
"Forget the gross overweight issue, it's the limits on the trailer placard for gross weight of the trailer that tigger the need for the license (even if the trailer is empty and weighs 8000# below gross). The question of over gross weight will follow the P.C. for the stop (with possible citation), the discovery of your out of class operation (with citation & possible parking/towing of your rig), and then your trip on the scales. Your day has already gone downhill before the gross weight issue comes up.
How many people scream about illegals driving without a license and no insurance? You're doing the same thing!!!! If you're out of class, you're unlicensed plane and simple and your insurance company can take a pass on you. Just get the license or a lighter trailer."
