The economic problems are indeed a sad situation. However, I disagree with the term "burns through". Unlike the bank & Wall St bailouts where the money goes straight into some fatcat's pocket. The automakers use the money to pay their employees, who, for the most part, are hard working Americans that put the money back into the economy and are our best hope for recovery.

I have found that spending money is easy, as long as it isn't mine

Are you saying the employess of GM earn 10.2 billion dollars in three months? If so, the employees are the reason this company is going down the drain. However, if GM is trying to pay off back debts then maybe there is a snowball's chance, however unlikely, that this company may some day be profitable. The most likely scenario is that the US auto industry will be a government run boondoogle akin to the post office and AMTRAK. They will get yearly government funding from taxpayer dollars and will never again turn a profit.

Anybody else ever see the little box sedan that was the only car the comrades could purchase in the bad old days of the Soviet Socialist Republic? Called a "Lada", "Tribant", or something like that. I am pretty sure it was originally designed/built by Fiat. Hmmm. Government control/Fiat designed/certainly not for profit.

It was NEVER a realistic assumption that they'd turn things around in 90 days and continuing losses is the ONLY realistic expectation over that time frame. The idea was for them to have a PLAN for turning things around in that time frame. Haven't seen much of that either though.

Yup, exactly the reason I'm not looking forward to the day when the only cars & trucks available will be designed/built by the Government of the People's Rebublic of China!
