Hi all,
My wife and I are considering purchasing a '02 Traverse that is being sold locally at a Chevrolet dealership.($17,900) It has 29,000 miles and appears to be in excellent condition. The original purchaser died after owning the van for a little over a year. His wife put the van in a garage and it has been used only minimally the last 5 years. I test drove it and it drives like a new vehicle. I am concerned there may be issues with deteriorated gaskets , seals, hoses, and belts because of sitting so long. After driving van for about 25 miles on highways and interstates, I crawled underneath and could find no indication of leaks from engine or drive train. The only problem I could find, there is no rear air. There is a rear air blower control switch in the dash, but there are no rear air vents in the van. Nobody at the dealership could find the rear air, either. I'm guessing installation of the pop-top required the removal of the rear air? Also, does anyone know where the table top is stored in these vans? We could find the base and post, but the only table top was a small one attached to one of the side doors. The literature shows a larger table.
Any thoughts, advice, or insights as to the purchase of this van would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased a 2001 PW two years ago that had been used very little by the original owner, as in your situation there were no leaks, seeps, or other signs of potential problems. We have had no problems at all with the chassis or motorhome components since our purchase and really feel good that we are able to enjoy a MH in like-new condition for less than half-price. I don't think you will have any problems, but it wouldn't hurt to see if the dealer will provide an extended warranty as part of your negotiation; the price sounds fair to me. Ours is an Excel model and the table tops are stored in the closet behind the drivers seat, don't know what the setup in the Traverse model is.

I've got a 2002 Traverse and it's a pretty neat rig. The table, if it's there should be stowed behind the driver's seat. The price is very good and based on NADA high retail vs. what that unit would likely sell for in a private resale. My Traverse has about 46k miles on it and I have little doubt I could sell it for at least $20k here in the west.
Offer them at least a thousand less (that'll cover any gaskets). Check the tires closely too as even if there's lots of tread they could need replacing if they're the original tires.
As far as the rear air, I never thought about that!

I love my Traverse!! Infact I have just decided to sell my Roadtrek and just use my Traverse. It drives really nice and I have never had any major problems. My Traverse dosen't have any AC vents in the back either even though there is a dial on the dash. I use it as my primary driver and it fits in the parking garage at work.
I did want to mention that it is a good price. I still owe more than that on mine!

The Traverse is a great rig - and that IS a good price. As mentioned earlier, I'd try to haggle a bit, but I'd still not let it pass by at that price.
My Traverse had the switch on the dash for the rear air also. It's probably installed in all base vans whether the air is installed or not so's that if factory style rear air is added later, the dash won't have to be removed to run wiring and install the switch.
The factory rear air will not work in a converted Traverse.

Thank-you for the reply's to my questions and concerns. We purchased the Traverse today for the asking price. (They would not budge on price, as there evidently had been much interest in the van). I spoke with the dealership about my concerns with parts not covered under their 90 day warranty, and they said they will work with me if problems arise within that period. We are looking forward to our first trip to Land Between the Lakes in western Ky in July. We have also started planning a month long trip to Colorado/New Mexico in Aug/Sept.
Again, Much Thanks!

Congratulations on your new purchase. Check out the rally forum for a mini social that is being held this fall in Colorado. Might be fun for you to meet a bunch of other B owners. Out West Rally
