So here is the deal. One of the ST lovers should point us to page after page of posting of people that are have problems to LT tires on larger 5th wheels.
1. Firestone Transforce
2. Uniroyal Laredo HD/H
3. BFG Commercial TA
4. Michelin XPS RIB
5. GY G614 (Had problems when made in china)
5. Any other quality LT tire not made by the chinese.
Please post those links so we can go read about all the problems.
In return we can post several pages of links to ST tire issues, no wait those links already show up right here day after day.
Without a doubt Goodyear and others could make a great ST tire if they wanted to, it would however not resemble the current lot and it would end up costing about the same as a high quality LT tire. But again, Goodyear already does that with their RST G614.
So for those that want a cheap flimsy tire, have at it! Just be honest in recommending them to overs. You get what you pay for and the weight of a tire IS a good indicator of it quality. The air pressue in the tire is what carries the weight (see load charts - LRC 50lbs, LRD 65lbs, LRE 80lbs), put that air in a flimsy wrapper and you are going to have problems.

For johno: The tire dealer you have chosen to work with has a very good track record in steering customers in the right direction. If you have asked them for mid priced tires it appears that is what they have done. Any really good dealer would also point out all options. If you feel you have been misled you should look elsewhere. I'm not familiar with the type of tire that came on your signature 5er so my only recommendation is that you replace them with replacement tires that match the manufacturers placard on the 5er.

5. GY G614 (Had problems when made in china)

The 614 was never made in China it's always been produced in the good old USA at the Topeka KS plant. The ones I had fail on our trailer (the tread came off not flat) where made in the USA and the replacements have the same stamp. The Marathons where moved to China and back to the US, I was at Walmart yesterday and they had some so I checked them out and they are made in the USA so I know that for sure. I talked to a GY rep that's been with them for 30 years about the 614 tires and he assured me they have always been made in the same place. He also stated that the 614's should be replaced after 4 years of use, that's also the warranty period. If I have one more tread come off I'm upgrading to 17.5 rims and load range H tires and they will not be GY.

That's sure is funny as there are a lot of people that have posted about G614 produced in china in the 2006 time frame. Maybe this is just more internet mis-information. A really expensive tire like the G614 and replace it every 4 years, give me a break. Chris

I have personally looked at a lot of 614's on trailers new and old on our travels and have never seen one made in China ( I trust what I see not what I read on the internet). I have seen a lot of damage that was repaired by GY when the tires where under warranty but never a China made 614. The 4 year warranty is the reason for replacing after 4 years. Our first set was 4 years 2 months old so no warranty and I had to fix our damage myself when the tread came off. Our present set will be 4 years old in April of 2011 and will be off our trailer before then. I know what to look for before the tread comes off so I'm keeping a close eye on them and trying to decide what to do next.

Well for what it's worth I sent my 4 yr old Marathons to a farm in PA and put Michelin XPS Ribs on. Just got back from a trip Boston to southern VA. I think the trailer tracked better and I didn't have to worry about the 65MPH speed limit. Cost was kind of high but peace of mind was worth it.

I wish I could go to load range E but with our trailer I have no option but the G's or heavier. I did look at 265/85/16 E's with the 3450 rating but I would still have to buy new rims, I have 6" and they take 7" so would not gain anything in the end. I keep hoping that someone else will start making a US made G tire but it's to small of a market for the expense for the manufactures.
