OK, inquiring minds wish to know how my cell phone, when it does a search, makes sounds through a radio's speaker even though the radio is turned off. Weird!

A good guess is that you have AT&T. My AT&T work phone does it but my personal Verizon phone does not. It has to do with frequency and harmonics and all that tech stuff. I can tell when my work phone is going to ring if I'm near a speaker or computer. I did not answer your complete question but at least you know your not alone. "Trust no one" X

We have AT&T, too, and both our phones do it. We first heard the noises about 8 years ago when arriving or leaving the Austin Airport. So we nicknamed it "the noise from the outer marker" like in the movie Die Hard2. It just sort of stuck and now those noises are the outer marker noises!

We could never get divorced because no one else would understand all of our little phrases!!

Same here... I have had AT&T for about twenty years or so and have never experienced any problems like you describe..

Is your phone laying on top of the radio ?

What kind of radio is it.. automobile with 12 volts or house radio with 110 volts..?

What type and brand of phone is it ... a low end like LG or high end brand like Nokia or Motorola .. ?

Bar phone or flip phone.. simple phone or Smart phone ?

etc...

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.

Is your phone laying on top of the radio ? No, it happens mostly when it's near the radio in the kitchen or near my cb in the Jeep but it's happened around other radios as well. The radios don't even have to be turned on.

What kind of radio is it.. automobile with 12 volts or house radio with 110 volts..?

What type and brand of phone is it ... a low end like LG or high end brand like Nokia or Motorola .. ? It's a LG but I've had it do the same thing on my old Motorola as well.

Bar phone or flip phone.. simple phone or Smart phone ? Flip

The sound it makes is hard to explain, kind of like the old rotary phones would make when dialing.

Several years ago when I first noticed it, it drove me crazy trying to figure out where the sound was coming from until I discovered it was coming from the speaker and it only happened when the phone was on.

From my limited understanding and reading about this subject, I have an AT&T RZR, is that any TDMA based system, (GSM, iDen, and IS-136 are all TDMA) will produce the static buzz that gets picked up by nearby electronics. The TDMA phones use dead time slots to listen for other base stations nearby in the event of a hand off. This causes a power fluctuation that is picked up by other devices like your TV, Radio, PC Speakers, etc. CDMA phones don't have this problem is because by design they can listen up to 6 other base stations simultaneously.

Your cell phone is always listening and talking to cell sites as long as it is powered on. Cell sites are listening to cell phones and deciding which cell to assign you to...all the time. Cell sites even control the power of your cell phone so that it doesn't interfere with other cell sites. When you get a call, the system has to know where you are so that it can route the call to you and turn on your transmitter, thus the buzzing in the speakers. It comes from your cell phone transmitter being activated. As you travel down the road cell sites are constantly evaluating your signal strength and when you leave one site it must switch your cell phone to the new site along with the call you are receiving, thus the "pop" sound occassionally. It's all very amazing....
