Our 2006 - PW Excel had the same problem when we tried to heat the hot
water tank. Water indicated 1/3..Filled the water tank to over 2/3 full and no more beeping.
When we had the generator installed - I was told by the mechanic that even a wiff of a gas would signal "gas problem." He wanted to tear the
darn thing out.He said they never had a problem with other units.

I hope you didn't take the mechanic's advice. Unlike the natural gas in your home, propane is heavier than air and can accumulate inside the van, which is why the LPG detector is located near the floor. All RV'ers need a working gas detector. As I mentioned in an earlier reply, the newer units from CCI Controls are much better but still work. You test the replacement by holding a lighter next to it and releasing gas without lighting it.
