I purchased a Champion 4000 Watt peak/3500 watt generator last year and it works great. But I think it's a bit loud although it's supposedly running at 68db. They say it's the sound of a vacuum cleaner. Does anyone know if the extended pipe for generators you find at Camping World would work on this muffler to extend the fumes and quiet down the sound would work on this generator or would there be a way to make one using the flange that's already on there for the spark arrestor?

I'm sure lots of others here will chime in on this one, but the noise you hear is only marginally from the exhaust. Most of the noise is mechanical (not from the exhaust).

There is a thread (3000 Chinese) which you'll find in the first 5 pages or so. It's 750 plus pages of information. While it's a full blown novel, all the questions you could ever ask including how to silence your generator is covered in excruciating detail.

Give it a once over and you'll get a handle as to what's needed and where to start.

Personally, I bought a 3000 watt Harbor Freight unit and after 6 months sold it and bought a yamaha.

Your Champion is more than a bit loud and is way over 68 db. There is no practical way to make it quieter and remain portable. Please do yourself and your fellow campers a favor and replace it with something more civilized.

Consider lining the generator compartment and other areas with DYNAMAT

good luck! many have tried but few have been successful. changing mufflers is useless because the noise is from the motor.

the Champion is pretty quiet for an open-frame contractor generator.
and you can't beat the price. but cheap cost is a trade-off for quietness. there is no quiet generator made for $300!
real quiet generators are not cheap. they have to have better sound insulation and quieter motors. that's why they cost more.

i was going to buy a Champion but the DW said, "no generator unless it's the most quiet one made!!!"

so i bought a Honda!

Disagree!

*NO* "Luck" necessary - just some simple items.

A Honda (inverter model) is very quiet when running in "Eco" mode.
When it ramps up due to a load it will rival a Champion.

You can have 4 Champions for the Cost of one Honda (3000).
Both will do the same thing. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

For the OP - In the search box, enter:
"Silencing a Champion Generator" - thread by "mrlith", 3-28-09
LOTS of info.

Here's a very thorough silencing effort:

"My $500.00 almost silent generator with Pic. & db readings"

Disagree! I have run my Honda 3000 at full load and my neighbor has a Champion 4000 he runs at full load (power outage). We had to scream at each other standing next to the Champion. Normal conversation next to the Honda. Not even close. To say otherwise is folly.

But, I bought mine for camping, he bought his strictly for power backup. I don't mind one bit that he has a loud generator when the power is out. I would loathe it if he were camping within 100 yards of me.

I have a Honda EU3000 and to say that it is as loud with econo mode off as a Champion is not true. It is louder than when econo mode is on, but still quieter that anything else besides a Yamaha. I recently bought a Home Depot Honeywell 2000i and it is pretty decent in econo mode but fairly noisy with econo off. But I knew it wasn't a Honda or Yamaha when I bought it.
