Sounds like a great trip. If you are near Crater Lake and haven't visited the Bend area you should consider it.
I also have to put in a plug for Lassen NP as you head south. An amazing place and perfect for a few days passing through.

Sounds like a great trip! We did a similar trip from Georgia in 2007. If you have time, drive up through Olympic National Park and then follow 101 south along the coast. Stay at Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington - full hookups, big sites, beautiful beach. The Oregan State Parks along the coast are great. See the Redwoods. We stayed on 101 to north of San Francisco and went across to Yosemite. You will love Yosemite. Zion National Park and Monument Valley are also worth a stop if you can fit them in. Have a great trip!

Great Sand Dunes is exactly that - GREAT... Yosemite is always crowded, but pretty amazing anyway. And Rte 395 is a fun drive too ... sounds like a great trip ...
When you leave Yosemite, think about back-tracking about twenty miles (or so?) to Angels Camp on Hwy 49 and then take Hwy 4 over the hill to Rte 395 ... that is an extremely scenic drive and lots of camping along the way.

See if you can fit in Yellowstone and the Blackhills , if you haven't been there before.
Also, while at the South Rim, if you are up to it, see if you can get on a Mule trip to the bottom ( Phantom Ranch) and stay the night down there. Well worth it. While they are usually booked a yr in advance, there are cancellations. The time we went, there was a couple that decided they weren't comfortable on the mules, so a couple that were there on standby took their spots.
Have fun -- we have a great country with outstanding sights and people

If you are looking for sights near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon:
1. Lake Powell/Rainbow Bridge (this is Utah, but in the vicinity)
2. Sedona (if going south to Phoenix)
...as for Vegas, well...what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

If you have never been through the Columbia River Gorge, pick a route that would take you through. It is beautiful and you can see sights while on your way to Seattle. Also there is a nice campground right on the river in Boardman, Oregon. We ended up extending our stay there last year. Cheap too.

If there are no time limits then don't set yourself to 8 weeks, just travel and enjoy the country. You'll find some places that you'll want to stay longer to explore and others that you can't get away from fast enough, just take it day by day and have a great time.

Mount St. Helens is worth a day. Camp in Seaquest State Park and drive up to the top.
Before you criticize someone, always walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you DO criticize them, you will be a mile away, and have their shoes.
