So, ah, tplife69... I'm guessing you don't really like canvas tents.

Not at all, I just moved on in technology. Put this way, I don't hunt deer with my dad's 30:30, I use an AR15. I don't ride my grandfather's 50hp 73 cu. in. FLH Harley, I have a 101hp fuel-injected 95 cu. in. FLHRI. I left canvas tents behind in the early '70s when Gore-Tex, new designs for double-wall bathtub tents and RipStop became household words in backpacking. Canvas is too bulky and heavy, just as I wouldn't use synthetic sleeping bags or large folding tables. Canvas tents will always have cool factor, just like my dad's 30:30 Winchester and my grandfather's classic Harley. They just don't fit my needs! That said, they provide a great forum for discussion, and since I'm often asked for recommendations for gear, thanks to you all I'm now informed on the best of canvas.

It's good to know we'll have the "cool factor" going for us in the campground....camping in old timer canvas tents. But hey, when a big storm rolls thru and the dome tents start collapsing around us....then we'll be the ones grinning from ear to ear. I've just read so many GLOWING reviews of how the Springbar and Kodiak tents perform in bad weather, that I know we'll be happy with our decision.

Yeah, well I'll stay with my canvas and cotton poplin tents and my Dad's 30-30 and Indian motorcycle. To each his own - you can have "modern" fabrics and puny calibers.

Some of us still looking for the large family tent, I like sleeping w/ my wife and won't can't have my daughters in a seperate tent, thus looking for a large tall tent, we to are selling our camper, to save a $$ as we are only camping a few times a year, but wish to be comftable. Good info so far!

WTW...you should check out the springbar colossus tent. It's 12 x 16, but still has their great design and stability in all kinds of weather. The price is steep ($999), but it truly is a tent that will last 30+ years if taken care of. Unfortunately Kodiak doesn't make a tent any bigger than the 10 x 14 and it would be tight to get 5 cots in that size tent. Now we are once again waffling in our decision of one tent or two. I would prefer one large tent for all of us since the girls are still young Good luck in your search. We are thrilled to be camper free because now there are no more PAYMENTS!!

thehelferfamily, just a thought. The kodiak tents have a large door and a large window on the front and the back. You could easily pitch 2 tents back to back and thus have some privacy, while the kids are just a foot away with easy access.

thankschub,
I hadn't thought of that...we'll have to consider that idea...I forgot the Kodiak has a front and rear door. We are headed to cabela's next weekend and they sell the Kodiak's so we'll be able to see quality and such first hand. Thanks for the suggestion
