It's either a crock or major misinterpretation!
GMs 2500HDs have the same GVWR and GCWR whether they are a 78" or 97" box.
IF this statement is intended to be applied the the "Super-short" 69" box, then it does start to make sense as they are only available on the 1500s.

Funny thing is though that the 2010 GM on-line order guide still shows specs for goose-neck and fifth-wheel towing on the 1500s with capacities up to 10,200# trailer weight. Check here
Marginal at best with a total payload of 1500# to 1900# though. (depending on model).

We do mostly dry camping in unimproved areas. We have a GMC 2500 crew cab short bed. Trailer is a 31' Cedar creek. I have a slider but have not needed to use it.
Most manual sliders need to be pretty level and straight to get the slide to unlock which has been my experience. The 2 times that I thougth I should slide the hitch back I could not get the pin to unlock because I was not level enough front to back. I have the Husky slider. My dad has the reese slider and has the same problem.
The 2 times I tried to get it to slide and clould not I just had to be more careful and in the end the traielr never even came close to hitting.
One other thing I don't like is there seems to be more play or slop in the hitch and I feel like I get more movement while towing than I would like.
If I had it to do over again I would probably get the Reese Signature series non slider. If I felt like I needed the slider I would probably just spend the money and get the Pullrite.

Do you have the pivoting hitch head? My Reese 16K with the 18K round tube slider works great at all angles, maybe just the pivoting head. I find my trailer is easier to back and manuever with the hitch slid back rear of the wheels.

Mine does have the pivoting head. The only problem I have had is trying to get the handle to release the slide, if I am slightly sloped downhill or uphill there is enough pressure on the release pin that I can't get it to slide out. I have heard that the round tube slider is better.
Once the hitch is slid back it works great.

I agree with kaydeejay. This was posted before. I kept thinking my truck is lighter (leaves more payload room) than a long bed. Someones got a lot of short bed owners to persuade what they have is no good for 5th wheels.

We have a s/b gmc no problem towing our 5th wheel.Been from Ma. to Fl. to Tx. and back.

I have a 03 GMC DMAX 2500, crew cab S/B and tow a 40ft 5th. My hitch is rated to 24k, its a slider and have only needed to slide it TWICE. The trailer has a front cap that was made to give extreme towing angles. Once when I first bought the trailer and was new to 5th wheel backing up. Second time when i had to hook up almost 90 degrees(will never do that again). Ive had issues trying to get it to lock back up after being slid but lowering the landing gear to release some wieght helped.

My TV in the sig is a SB and I have no slide on my Reese 16K. The 5'ver is 30' and 10,200 lbs max. The only time I ever missed the slide was the very first time we went out and I didn't know any better. Some say that when you need it, you really need it, but I have yet to be in that situation. I do have an extended pin, but still need to watch my mirrors. So I do.

2007 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Extended Cab S/B, Reese 16k Super Slider Hitch, 2009 Jayco Eagle Superlite, fully loaded 10k. Have not had to slide hitch yet and have no problems towing.
