For over 5 years I have been using ST and my laptop in the RV. I like the flexibility of editing your routes and searching for campground locations in your POI folder.
This year, I decided to give the standalone GPS a try. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 750. It's nice but it doesn't have the flexibility of Streets and Trips.
I then discovered a PC based program called GPSbabel (www.gpsbabel.org).
I can now design a route on ST, modify it like I want, and save it.
I then use the gpsbabel to convert the route into the GPX format that the Garmin GPS use (takes only seconds).
I then upload it to the Nuvi using the USB cable and the MY DATA option on the GPS.
Works like a charm!
As an added bonus, you can keep hundreds of routes on you laptop and load them to your Nuvi as required.
I'm posting this because some people might not be aware that you can do this.
If you like the flexibility of ST but want to use a standalone GPS, GPSbabel is for you.

SWEET!!!!! I love this forum.
What software do you use to get it to the Garmin?
Do you open the file with mapsource and download or
do you just copy the file to Garmin, My data directory?

Linda,
there is no need for Mapsource. When you connect your Nuvi to your PC you will see all of your Garmin folders. One is called Garmin and, within it there's a folder caller GPX. Just drag your .gpx route into it.
Then you disconnect your GPS and use MY DATA on your GPS to import the file. Once it's imported to start that route you use the WHERE AM I GOING? and select ROUTES. You will see the route you just created.
The key to this is to have enough waypoints in your ST route to "force" your Garmin in taking this route.
Have fun!

Ray, I just downloaded the program and have been playing around with it with little success. I, too, have a Garmin 750.
Using the GUI interface, there is no output option for GPX... HELP?
Also, if I try to output directly to the Nuvi, the program shuts down.

Okay, so I've found the GPX output option - it is not listed alphabetically under Garmin - it's further down.
Now, when I import it into the Nuvi, the route comes up as a straight line triangle...with NO instructions how to get from Point A to Point B...just "Drive to wherever (destination)...
What am I doing wrong this time?
ON EDIT: DUH on me - it would help if I could pay attention to the original instructions, Ray - drag the saved file into the >Garmin > GPX folder!!! I was only dragging it into the Garmin folder! DUH! Now it's working! Thanks for this great tip! I have S&T and love it but love the Nuvi - this provides the best of both worlds and easily, too, if your instructions are followed!

Michelle, you are using GPSBabelGUI-2?
If yes, in the output format, you will see the GPX XML (.gpx) choice. That's the one you need to use. On the second line, you put the file name ( without the .gpx extension) .
For the file name what I do is press the button at the right. The one with the red arrow. If your GPS is already hooked up to your PC, you will be able to load the file directly to it.
You also need to tick the waypoints box and no others.
It WILL work on the Nuvi 750.
If you still have problem. don't hesitate to post again.

I got a Garmin E-Trex. Low end job about 100 bucks, plus a 50 dollar cable that plugs into 3 things
1: RS-232 port on computer (ok, had to spend another fifteen bucks on a USB-RS-232) 12 volt outlet, Garmin.
Now,, I do my routing with S&T just like the O/P. plug in the Garmin and let S&T tell me when to turn too.
I just got to play with a Garmin Nuvi.
I am VERY GLAD, I do it the way I do it
Advantage Nuvi: Can be hand held. (Woopie)
Advantage S&T with GPS receiver.
WAY larger screen, Way easier to route, Actually found the city (in Canada) that they wanted to visit (I found it on the Garmin too but... not by typing in the name)
I can glance at the Laptop when driving and see if I"m on or off-route (if I have audio turned off) The Garmin I'd have to LOOK at (MOre concentration needed)
Coming back from Las Vegas last trip I glanced at the laptop and saw the triangle way off the green line (about a mile) pulled over and looked closer, went another mile, hung a left, 2 more miles and a right back on the line. Fantastic system.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business
