I have been following your cab rebuild,it looks real good. One question, what holds the first piece of filcon/plywood to the metal cab? I'm sure you pointed that out, I seemed to miss that detail. I will doing a cabover rebuild and a new roof before too long, not sure how much of the plywood on the sides, or the framing around the front window will have to replaced but I can tell that the U shaped piece is black with rot. I also followed MemoryRoads rebuild and roof jobs, both projects looked great, hope mine turns out as good. Thanks for the info.

The first piece of filon (original piece that I salvaged) has a lauan backing and was glued and stapled on the edges to a piece of wood (1.5x1.5") that follows the metal frame of the side wall. THAT piece of wood is attached with 3/8" bolts to the frame.(This wood was in good shape, as were the bolts, I did not have to tear off all the way to the roof line) I lifted the edges that attach to the wood (they were loose) and used 3m 5200 adhesive, and then put pressure back down on it. Once it was set up, I again used 5200 to fill the gap between the 90 deg wall fiberglass and the filon on the roof of the cabover. Does that make sense?

I think so. so the 1.5x1.5 that was glued to the filon/plywood slid up in between the outside sidewall and the inside paneling and attached from the bottom side onto the metal frame work. On the inside is their another layer of plywood? On mine,it looks like the best I can tell untill I get it torn apart, that there is piece of .060 filon,5/8' plywood,1.5x1.5,5/8 plywood, carpet. I am asumming that there is a 2x2 frame work with insulation inbetween the plywood. If this is true when I put it back together I will use foam insulation instead of batt. Thanks for the help, Dan

Yeah, you pretty much have it nailed with your description. They don't build them with much. Naturally, I overbuilt mine (double sandwich of 1/4" plywood and 1.5" foam in the sandwich) and you know what? It's STILL lighter than it was with that big huge window up front.

FINISHED! Well, for this winter. I'll be doing the exterior trim molding with fiberglass next spring. For now, the eternabond tape will get her through wet and snow. The arctic white doesn't match the cream color of the motor home, but what the hell, I'm a redneck at heart.
Before pics first!

After:

Trim piece beneath:Join of the two pieces of filon, and trim.

By the time you paint a big yellow smiley face across that front, I will bet no one will notice. Or how about one of those elaborate murals ?? Eagles/American flag...Hand & arm extended holding a musket, Babe & blue ox, Essex class carrier, Aroa Boreallis choise of a thousand colors & shapes, Mountains, or for those "red necks" Terry Redlin's paintings.."Morning warm-up", or his, "Our Friends" would do just super. How about putting out contracts, for adds. The rest of you guys here how about give our buddy here a hand with some suggestions, Come on !!!

Thanks all. I actually was surfing for one of those murial stickers last week! We'll see...for now, I'm just trying NOT to spend any more money for a bit with Christmas coming up!
I'd like to get the whole dang thing re-painted, but I'm afraid that would exceed the cost of what I planned to put back into this first Motor Home. I'm hoping I can move up to a Class A in a few years.
