Planning to leave with our camper this saturday for about 6 week trip to the east. Any suggestions about a campground near Washington DC that would be good and able to get tour buses to go in to see the sights. I'm not a good city driver (country boy) so leaving that driving to some else suits me fine. Thanks for your advice::::::::::

Cherry Hill just outside town. Buses pick up right in campground, and take you directly to the train station, and from their you're off! Nice place, too.

DW and I went to DC a few years ago and stayed at Pohick Bay Regional Park. We drove our truck to the nearby Franconia-Springfield metro station. We bought an unlimited weekly pass. Pohick is cost less than Cherry Hill if that is a consideration. We have no problem recommending this CG.

Also Green Belt NP if you are OK with dry camping. Easy access to Metro station and much less expensive than Cherry Hill. It is about a mile from Cherry Hill.

In the '70s we stayed a lot at Cherry Hill (junction of US1 and the I-95 bypass) just inside maryland.... very convienent to Washington DC. (it would be faily expensive... the property would be very much in demand for other uses if they weren't making good money renting spaces to RV'ers)
When I was in college we did a lot of class work at the smithsonion.. most of us stayed at Greenbelt Park also a few miles north of the Capitol. A lot of the students stayed in tents... I had a truck camper... when it rained I'd have a full house.
I have boondocked in the area many times... the last time in 2007... I don't recommend it for the novice... the area is a Wild and Crazy Place.
Good luck... send pictues please

jimbow2...check with Grey line tours. When I was in DC they came right to the motel and picked us up in a shuttle van. We took the 8 hr. tour with many stops to get off to tour buildings.

We stayed in Cherry Hill Park. For us it was great. We bought the tickets right in the CH office. They had the maps as well as a quick tutorial on how to get around.
We took the bus to Subway station and got off at Union Station so we could take the Trolley tours. With our Granddaughter, we went on the DC Duck. Then with our Son & DIL, we bought 2-day passes on the regular trolley. This helped us get to the farthest monuments and we didn't have to walk as much.

...Cherry Hill is pretty darn close to DC, however another option would be at the Washington-side of Prince William Forest Park, the RV concessionaire full-service campground called: "Travel Trailer Village" (their website here-->)
The price is quite reasonable (at about $30 all hookups included), it's close to many "touristy things", too. We've stayed there and like the place a lot (nice forest surroundings, very decent grocery stores near-by, and close to the #234 --> #28 --> #50 bypass route around DC {to avoid all the "dang-blasted" road construction in the area!!!}).
Whatever venue you choose, I'm sure you'll have fun
Good luck,

Silver,
Prince William looks good. Can U get to the subway easily? I have found the underground the easiest way around D.C. Every one enjoys the mall but the zoo is also a good place to visit.
