Thank you for all the replys::::::: Cherry Hill seems to be our goal; costly but better then a hotel. What day's of the week and when would be the best time of day to have the least amount of traffic short of going in at midnight???????????????? I am scared::::::::

The district has lots of people all the time... they are used to moving it... just get in the flow or take a break and wait for the surges to clear.
If you'd like to drive around Sundays are great.
You can spend a week visiting all of the Smithsonian buildings.
The capital is always nice.
Use a mesh or clear backpack... don't take anything that you don't need.
Aerospace museum has fast food
Art galleries have sit down resturants with good food that aren't anymore expensive than the fast food. I've had excellent Trout Almadine at the National Gallery of Art
Take rest breaks when available... long days and time will take a toll.

There is a near-by commuter lot (parking) called: Brittany P5 not 5 minutes drive from the campground (back towards I95) where you can get the R4 (Montclair transit bus) into town/or, other transit points to the Metro. There is also a much larger "Commuter Lot" called: "Route 234 & I95 Commuter Lot" where a nexus of transit lines crosses, not 7 minutes from the campground.

I'm surprised that nobody has cautioned jimbow2 to stay on the main streets in DC and don't venture into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Don't visit the south east quadrent
you can go anywhere in the north west quad... Dupont circle, zoo, george town, watergate, Kennedy center for Preforming arts,
The pentagon, the patent office in crystal city, the geological survey offices, areas are all OK
don't walk around after dark... you should be too tired anyway if you've had a good day.

We stayed at Pohick Bay two weeks ago based on your recommendation, and enjoyed it very much. Not at all crowded in October. First morning, three deer were grazing in the playground across from our site. Reasonable rates for such close proximity to the city. Nice staff, very clean restrooms.
Fifteen minute drive to the Springfield mall by several routes (some more scenic than others), free parking at the mall (levels 2,4, and 6), 25 cent TAG bus to the metro, eliminating parking hassles in DC. Blue line takes you right to the National Mall & Smithsonian.

Just got home after 4800+ miles. We stayed at Cherry Hills RV park in Wash,DC.. Perfect place to stay and tour out of. Bus picks you up at the park and takes you to Metro. Very nice people there and also helpful. Spent 4 night, didn't need to start the engine for nothing. Advice for Washinton DC visitors {have very good shoes and plan to use them} Had a great trip:::: Jimbow
