Typical GM stupidity IMO, if the quoted article is accurate. Why would you not market that to the public as well, and increase the number of potential units sold?

As stated and as I believe, Ford will only offer the Crown Vic to Police Departments and perhaps other such fleets. However, I have read that if someone knows their local Ford Fleet Manager, one could possibly buy one individually.

I have also read that anyone wanting a Crown Vic can easily get its twin sister, the Mercury Marquis, since it reportedly will still be offered to the general poublic. That rear-wheel-drive and fully framed platform and drivetrain is a legend for sturdy construction and long lived performance as demonstrated in taxi fleets, etc. Reaching 300K to 500K with the 4.8 modular engine is commonly reported in such circles.

All this is probably Ford's effort to simplify and consolidate their offerings.

They quit offering the old Caprice because virtually NOBODY was buying. A few old people, maybe, but that's it.

If you only sell to law enforcement, you make one car with one trim level, one color, no options, and a fixed set of features. You just stamp 'em out one after the other. No fuss, no muss.

When you add the general buying public to the mix, then you have to deal with the overhead of multiple colors, multiple trim levels, options, and the logistics of all the parts and pieces associated. If sales were poor before, and most of the people that were buying 14 years ago are now either in nursing homes or DEAD, who do you think you're going to sell to?

Okay, you can sell a few to Funkmaster Flex and his crew. Wonder what they'll call the new Caprice in the hip-hop culture? The '91-'96s were called "bubbles" if I'm not mistaken.

There is a whole lot of people on this forum that base the "towing ability" of a vehicle almost exclusively on it's shape. IE, If it looks like a pickup or SUV, then towing is no problem. If it looks like a car or minivan, don't bother.

What fails to get thru to many of these heads, is that these days much of the construction between crossover SUVs and sedans/minivans is the SAME. Many are unibody in construction and share engines and powertrains.

So why WOULDN'T a sedan, built with a stout 6.0 liter V8, heavy-duty transmission and driveline, performance brakes and suspension and a rigid chassis be able to tow a trailer? If all these same features were placed underneath SUV sheetmetal (like say a Traverse) then people would believe a 5000 tow rating was possible, but place it underneath a sedan and everyone laughs.

And I'll add that a sedan has a lower center of gravity, better lateral stability, shorter sidewall tires, tighter suspension and lower wind resistance than the typical platform-sharing crossover SUV, all of which combine to IMPROVE towing, not degrade it. So there is really no technical merit to the feeling that towing with a car is not possible.

This car is a larger version of the Holden car that previously was sold as the Pontiac G8. This version is on the long wheel base car. I don't recall the Holden name for it. The Holden Commodore that the G8 was based on was rated for 2200 kg towing I believe (4850 lbs). I'm not sure about this one.

I don't know why people are so scared of anything that isn't a body on frame design. The older GM full size vans (pre '95) were not completely unit body nor was the Astro van. The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have never been body on frame yet nobody is scared to pull with those other than the shorter wheelbase.
