Noooooooo! A good hot wing is a little crispy, a crock pot cooked chicken wing is rubbery. Unless you like rubbery chicken wings, do not use a CrockPot. If you like rubbery wings just order a batch from Pizza Hut!
One main defining characteristic of a hot wing is a crispy skin. The desired crispy skin is the whole reason folks have mentioned deep frying, baking, and grilling.
My preferred method is to take frozen wings, usually from the giant bag purchased at Costco, lightly spray them with olive oil. Then I sear them at +600F degrees on the grill, about three minutes on each side. I finish grilling/baking them on the opposite side of the grill, (over a burner that has been turned off), until they reach a desired level of crispiness perfection. The smoke flavor that they pick up in the grill is why this method is preferred over frying or baking in an oven.
I use the original recipe on the Franks Red Hot sauce bottle, (sauce and butter). Served with a good Ranch or Bob's Big Boy Blue Cheese dressing.
BTW, the ONLY way to get "Wings Like Hooter's" is to have young female servers in t-shirts and orange short-shorts serving them. It's not the seasoning/recipe that makes the wings special!
