You may want to contact Coachman with the serial number of you MH, if you don’t have a serial number the vin # and see if they can give you the key #. If you have any of the paperwork that came with the MH when new you may find the key numbers. That’s how it works at Winnebago anyway.

Up until the sale of Coachmen to Forest River, this would have been possible. In fact TriMark sells cut keys on their eBay site.

The problem is that most of the unit "database" was lost when they transitioned from the Coachmen Industries web domain to the Forest River domain.

Astrorig57,

Thanks for this information. I was hoping to just have a key made and not replace the whole assembly.. The lock assembly you included looks exactly like mine.... Did not know I was driving a Horse Trailer!!!!!

It seems to be a rather multi-purpose assembly.

I wish I could have replaced a key, or just a tumbler assy, as well. I'm familiar with replacing the whole unit as some little darling at a campground shoved something into my deadbolt lock and destroyed it.

I suppose they thought it would be fun, and render me unable to get into the motorhome. It seems they forgot I could go in through the cab and unlock the house door.

I did see on the Trimark site that they sell cut keys but advise you to get the key number from one of your keys --- which I do not have..... Placed a call to Coachman to see if they could help me as I do have my coach and VIN numbers and left a message but they never called me back. Will try to call them again next week.

Why don't you just drive the MH to a good locksmith and have a key made. Shouldn't cost much more than buying a tool kit and having the key made anyway. Unless, of course, the locksmith is 75 mi away or something. :- )

I'm surprised your locksmith did the job for $20! One time we locked ourselves out of our van at Yellowstone park. I asked a ranger for coathanger but he was called away before delivering it. Unfortunately he did call a locksmith from a nearby garage. By the time the locksmith got there, I had opened the door with a piece of scrap I found nearby, but the locksmith parked behind, blocking our van. He demanded $100 for the trip. He finally let me go as a professional courtesy when I showed my locksmith license.

If you don't have the key code, you have to take the lock off, disassemble it to get the barrel out and then make the key to fit using a file. I did one recently and it took quite a while, though a lot of the time was spent figuring out how to disassemble and reassemble the unfamiliar and tricky lock. I'm just a lock hobbyist, not a pro, and don't charge for most things.

Just in case, price out a new lock before you ask the locksmith what it will cost to make a key. I have seen them for $130 or so at the RV dealer here. I doubt if the deadbolt adds a whole lot to security and it can be a nuisance having to carry TWO keys just in case your spouse has doublelocked the door. In some cases the door can be closed AFTER the regular lock (though not the deadbolt) has been locked by flipping the inside lock lever - you can lock up and leave without your key. So, if you only carry one key it may be preferable to carry the regular lock key rather than the deadbolt one. I helped a guy in that situation at our nearby municipal campground.
