While cleaning up the trailer after a week long trip I refilled the black tank using our sani flush. I forgot about it for a couple minutes. When I remembered, I shut off the water, checked the level gauge (it read full) then pulled the release valve and water really gushed out hard for 20 seconds or so, way harder than normal. I wonder if I caused any damage to the tank, seams, or anything else. I refilled it and let it sit overnight and no apparent leaking has occurred. We have a Nash so the tank is insulated and not visible.
Any thoughts? I'm sure I swelled the tank a bit and some trapped air got compressed a bit.

if you only left it a couple minutes you should be okay...if five, ten or longer...that is another story.
Air shoulr have went up the vent pipe but then agin so would water.
I am not sure if I would open the toilet gate as it could back flow into the bowl or worse !!!

The roof vent should let most of the pressure out when overfilling.
Did any water come out of the toilet?

The vent would have not have allowed any real pressure to build. You would have most likely blown out your toilet seal before the tank would let go. Have fun. Bill

You are lucky your tank didn't burst. There have been posts of split tanks, bulged floors, etc from over filling. These flat tanks will not withstand any pressure. For example a 20 x 60 in 30 gallon tank has 1200 sq in flat top and bottom. That means only one psi would put 1200 pounds of force on the top and bottom. That would buldge or burst it. The vent will not save it since the pressure will increase 1 psi every 2 feet the water rises.

I think you need to re-figure your math.

Forget all the "rocket science"..It doesn't sound like you have a problem to me.
Let it sit full for a couple more days and since water runs down hill, if you don't see any on the ground under your rig, you should be good to go.

There ain't no doubt about it if the tank blows....and it will blow before the toilet valve fails or the water climbs to the tank vent.
You luckily escaped an ugly situation.
I got distracted by a talkative neighbor once and wasn't so fortunate.
I will do all possible to prevent it from happening again.

We were at a campground for a rally and one of the campers turned on his sani-flush to flush out the black tank after emptying it. Well he forgot about it (he said it was a senior moment) and the black tank filled and water was shooting up through his vent. That is how a neighbor noticed it. He turned off the water, drained the tank and everything was fine except he did leave the campground for a while to go to the local Blue Beacon. For the rest of the Rally, he was harassed by everyone, with comments like "Thar she blow Ahab", (is that how you clear your pipes?) The only damage was to his dignity.

I guess a lot of people do not read the instructions on their san a flush or other types of tank cleaners that is usually posted right next to the inlet where you hook up the garden hose. It says not to operate this system without first OPENING the black tank drain gate. If you don't follow instructions, you sometimes pay the price. "Thar she blows" is an apt description of what can happen. So to the Original poster, I say you got lucky, and my only suggestion in the future is follow directions and open the black drain gate first.
