Last night while my cat Timmy was sitting on my lap I was rubbing his head and noticed swelling around his ear, so off to the vet this morning and I was told he had a lot of fleas.

Well I have him on FrontlinePlus, he does go out doors, he likes to lay in the bushes on the mulch plus we live in a wooded area.
So I gave him his FLP about two weeks ago but he has fleas.
The vet said they have had a lot of complaints that this product loses it's effectiveness over time.

If this is true, what else is out there?
I hate using the chemicals at all but sometimes they are necessary.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you sure that you are applying the Frontline correctly - getting it all the way down to the skin and not just on his hair? Can be pretty tough to do on some animals with only one person. Trying to hold the hair out of the way and squeeze the applicator too.

We used to use Frontline Plus on the cats but have switched to Revolution because one seems sensitive to it. Maybe discuss Revolution with your vet? Not as effective on ticks or so I've heard.

Thanks for the input but yes, my DH and I do this together, don't think I would try it by myself and I'm very careful to get it on the skin.
When I pick Timmy up I'll talk to her about Revolution though I need a good tick preventive since we live in an area that is pretty heavy with ticks.
Thanks

How's the carpet and furniture in your house ... is there potential for flea infestation there?

Our flea problems ended when we moved into this house with no carpet and bought leather furniture. Cat and dogs continued to frequent the outdoors, cat loved to sleep in the woods on the moss, but that wasn't the source of the fleas we had previously ... the house was. I admit I was a bit lazy about vacuuming diligently ...

Sher, consider adding comfortis or capstar oral medications for flea control. Talk to your vet about this. When we've had breaks, this addition has always worked.

I have a lot of cats and dogs. The FLplus works fine on my dogs, but I have switched to Advantage for the cats.

If the pet had fleas, so does your home. You need to set off some flea bombs in the home, now that you're treating the pet. It won't do any good to treat the pet, if the home still has the fleas he's brought in with him in the past.

We've found that any of the flea remedies, Advantage, Revolution, or Frontline, work equally well for us, as long as we keep our home free of the little pests, also.

We have used front line plus for many years with cats and doggs. Switched to Advantage 2 years ago for cost. Both work equally well for us.

We switched from Frontline more than 2 years ago. It didn't seem to be working. We are now on Comfortis.

After months of fighting with the Vet over the(non) effectiveness of FLP, I finally switched to Revolution for the cat. Three days later, no more fleas! The dog was unaffected by the cat's fleas, and FLP has been fine for her.
