My rig has these dual bulb incandescent lights that are too bright and get way too hot. So of course I'm looking to change them to LED. Color rendition (tint) is important to me so what would you recommend?

Hi,

When I bought my RV in 96, they did not have LED replacement fixtures for a reasonable cost, and not in white.

I replaced the light over my kitchen sink with a 8W florescent, and the dining table with a 26W. That one is a little to bright, and uses the same power as turning on both lights in another factory fixture.

I recently came across some LED lights at this place. BestConverter.com Click on the light page. I did not look at many of them, as I have plenty of solar panels, and excess power daily. One looks like a nice LED reading light, and if not for the $30 fee, I might order a couple of them.

There was a recent post with LED replacement lenses and bulb conversion packs. I think it has about 15 white lights and they are installed under the factory style lens cover. So it will look like all the others until you turn it on, and it is really bright without using so much power. You might consider replacing 3-5 of the most popular fixtures with this type of lamp. Then use the factory lights only about 60 minutes a night, while the LED would be used for hours to light up the RV.

I also considered a new outside LED light from Best Converter - link above. But really don't want to spend money on something that will only allow me to shut off the battery charger a few minutes earlier each day. I have a 415 watt solar system, so that is plenty.

Good Luck,

Fred.

I'd go with fluorescents myself but then I have been accused of "hating" LEDs.

I have the same questions... When I first started looking at the LEDs I gave up due to the high cost. So, what I did was locate lower wattage wedge style bulbs (less bright and cooler) at the Bulbman. This site also has the bayonet style bulb in many wattages. Both styles run about 50-60 cents each.

Since the prices have gone down, I have been looking at the LEDs again and have been unable to locate a chart that cross references wedge style bulbs to a same intensity LED configuration. Would it be some sort of lumen comparison? I haven't found any comparisons anywhere. And a color spectrum comparison would be nice as well. Does anyone know where such a comparison is located?

The bulbs I am currently using are;
921 18watt 1.5amp
908 9watt 0.75amp
918 7watt 0.58amp
901 4watt 0.33amp

There are many online sources including this one. Try before you buy. LEDs have a very different color than regular lights and many including myself do not care for it.

Take a look at this post by the moderator of this forum, LAdams, for what he did, and it is complete with comparison pictures.

I replaced all the bayonet style bulbs with LED versions from Super Bright LEDs. I can now turn on almost every light in the camper for the same amperage as 1 or 2 of the old bulbs. They carry a variety of bulbs with different outputs and colors. I would try a couple to see how you like them. The light is different. I don't mind it and the energy saving is well worth it since I boondock almost exclusively. Pictures will not give you a true look at the light diffenences as the camera will invariably do it's own tricks with the white balance.

We also got our LEDs from Super Bright LEDs. They have replacement LEDs for most (if not all) 12 volt bulbs. Our interior lights use 2 1156 bulbs - with a 3 way switch on each. So - we replaced half of our bulbs with circuit board style LEDs, when we are boondocking we only turn them on half way - which uses the LEDs and when we are hooked up to electric we *can* turn them on all the way if we want that yellowish glow to things. You can tell we are very used to our LEDs and they have been a wonderful upgrade to go along with our 2 6volt batteries - we have never run out of power yet and we haven't even gone solar!
