Is there any difference between the 720 or 760 air cards. My 2yr year commitment is ending with Verizon and I can get the 760 free with a 2 yr commitment. Also to those in the know will there be a better card coming out soon.
It's my third card since I signed up as the other two died but basically the 720 isn't bad other than the occasional disconnects where the only way to reconnect is rebooting.

AFAIK there is no difference. I have the USB 720 and it has provided great service, MUCH better than the previous PCMCIA card and PCE card versions. Both the 720 and 760 use the same Rev-A freqs, and do so at the identical power levels.

I believe the undesired kick-offs are due to VZ load balancing, although you'll never get them to admit this. I grin and bear it, and log on again. IMO, VZ is the clear leader in signal provision and customer service, and I would never switch. I've had ATT and they were a disaster, and I'm in no mood to try Sprint when VZ is so good, FWIW.

Be aware, there have been several revs to the service contract, and you MIGHT currently be covered in a contract that allows you truly unlimited use, which is now limited to 5gb a month. If you were to get a new phone and agree to a new contract, you would lose any rights accorded under the previous contract. Those of us who have the old contract call ourselves "grandfathered".

All of the prevous is subject to revision by the experts who will eventually chime in.

I have no experience with the 760 but about a year ago Verizon gave me a free upgrade frim a 720 to a 727 after I complained about service interruptions using the 720. I felt that it was a significant improvement and am still using it.

You do not necessarily lose plan features that you currently have when you upgrade. Insist that they roll those over.

Our 760 has a plug in for external antenna (Wilson trucker antenna) which is handy.
Anyone know if the 720 has it?

The 727 has an external antenna jack, to which I have connected a Wilson antenna mounted on the mast of my crank-up television antenna. It gives me a significant boost in signal strength.

I have the 720 with a Cradlepoint 350 and Wilson antenna. They work great together.
One point to consider: Vz is rolling out their 4th Generation service next year. Any equipment that you buy should either be compatible with that or upgradeable with software. As far as I can tell at this point the 720, the 350 and the antenna are not compatible with the Vz 4G service. Also a good point was made earlier about making sure that all your present plan features rollover with any new contract.

If your current Verizon contract period began prior to March, 2008 then it is not subject to Verizon's overage charges. This is a big deal!
If you sign a new contract you will be subject to new contract rules and overage charges! This is a big deal. IF your contract period did in fact began prior to March, 2008 then you are far better off not going with a new contract and just going month to month after your current contract expires. OK, I know you want a new wireless broadband device but you can buy them relatively cheap on eBAY, etc. For example here is a V740 ExpressCard- Verizon modem with antenna port ($25) on Craigslist.

By the way, your Verizon Wireless USB720 is an EVDO Rev A USB Modem which is what the USB760 is. Testing of the EVDO Rev A USB Modem's has them all pretty much the same performance wise.

What Bill said.

And be aware, MOST discounts on new gear require a new 1- or 2-year contract. You do not actually SIGN anything when you accept this new contract, although VZ makes you talk to a recording to affirm your agreement. If you accept and use the discounted equipment past the trial period, you have accepted the new contract in the eyes of VZ.

You can still buy equipment from VZ without a new contract, but you will likely pay a higher (roughly $200) price. And you must make it clear that you do not want a new contract.

I can tell you from personal experience VZ is desperate to get people off the old contract. I called to inquire about new equipment without a new contract, and even so the CS rep spent the whole time trying to get me to switch.
