If you head east from NYC avoid the Southern State Parkway - it surprised us to see a few overpasses in mid-Nassau posted at less than 8'6" - most likely this was for the right lane, as the middle looked like it had a lot more clearance - but I would not want to take a chance.

I also noticed in Shadow's post he said "all bridges" but didn't mention any tunnels. I remember reading somewhere that because of the propane tanks, RV's are not allowed in tunnels, however it wasn't city or state specific. I am thinking somewhere like the Hampton Roads area in VA it would be next to impossible to have such a restriction, since from what I recall there are such limited routes outside the tunnels.

Overhead clearances shrink when the roadway is repaved without removing the old paving. Some signs are not to be trusted.
The older parkways were built in the 30s under the direction of Robert Moses. His vision was that they would be for "pleasure driving", no trucks allowed. He did not ever have a drivers license. He was chauffeured around in a limo. I saw him a few times riding along in the back seat reading his newspaper. He was adamant that the speed limit would be 35 mph on "his" parkways.

We might drive 3/4 ton and 1-ton pickups as passenger cars here. Some lifted 4x4s might go well over eight foot. In the NY metro area, they don't use that kind of vehicle as a passenger vehicle. They also don't stop at the farm and ranch to pickup up feed for the horses or a few dozen steel fence posts on the way home from work. Great Plains, New York City: different cultures.
The the original question, is a van a passenger car? Here, no doubt that it is, so is our pickup. I've lived in some cities where "passenger cars only" means your privately-owned pickup or full size van is going to get a ticket.

If they can allow some of those larger SUVs like the Escalade on the parkways then you should not be uncomfortable w/your vehicle. Just make sure you have height clearance for the underpasses. Some of them only have 10' clearance. Just north of White Plains, NY there is one that is only 9'7"(north of Valhalla).

Alex The height restrictions on The Southern State Pkwy and The Northern State Pkwy are for the lowest point which is usually the right lane. Most bridges are shaped like an arch so stay in the middle or left lanes. Those heights usually are around 10' to 11'. Vans and pickup truck are allowed on the Parkways as long as they have Passenger plates on them.

We have been taking note of the overpass heights on the Southern State Pkwy. A number are 7'10" but as you say, Mike, they look a lot higher in the middle lane. We did find that the change from the Southern State onto the Belt just about where the Cross Island splits off north is just 7'4" and this does not look like it gets any higher as this is just two lanes and tight.
I have watched school buses pass under the 8'4" overpasses in the middle lane. I am not sure about the 7'10" and would not want to risk taking off the top of the van. Also definitely would be afraid to go under that 7'4". When we get our B we will have to find a new route off the Island - either north to the 495 to the Brooklyn-Queens Expwy or Sunrise into Queens where the belt seems to be all high overpasses. NY/LI is not RV friendly.

The last time we went throught the Toll Booths (no EZ Pass) at the Tappan Zee we were charged $5.00 as a passenger car - the year before $13.50 as a truck! Hard to argue with the cars queing up behind. Supposedly there is a height rule on the NY Thruway...

I've had EZ Pass charge me for an extra axle on our Class B, but when I call them they always give me a credit. Whether or not it is worth saving the $8 depends on how long you are on hold
