I'm new to this forum and curious about the mpg differences with and without an 8-9' cabover camper on the same vehicle. I now have 03 Duramax pulling 27' 5r and have thought about going to the pu camper for access to some of the smaller campgrounds here in Colo.
I started out in 1967 with 65 Dodge 1/2 ton, with a 8' Mitchell cabover and really enjoyed it, but as family grew we went to trailers.
Also what are some of "lite weights" in weight now days, I believe my old Mithchell was around 1200 lb.
Correction to start: a 9x9 military tent, white gas stove and coleman latern, packed in and on a 60 VW Bug.

our truck averages 17.3+, w/o camper (4000#)
12-15 w camper with 12.5 avg (got 9.5 once 16.3 once)
Though thers a difference in my opinion in hauling and towing
I would venture to guess, especially if you go light weight, youll probaly see alot better mpg than your getting towing your 27'.

Down the road Id like to get a pop top for soloing-maybe optimistic but unless Im towing jeep on tralier or boat Im thinking mpg differance will hardly be noticable.

20 mpg on the highway at between 60 and 65 mph empty with tonneau cover in place. Towing fifth wheel I average about 11.5 (15,000 lbs.). With the 4200 lb truck camper I average about 14.5 mpg. I have had as high as 17.0 and as low as 12.5. Towing the 14 ft. cargo trailer with the Harley and the atv inside gets about 1mpg less.

I have found my camper costs me about 1 MPG, all other things being equal, but my MPG is much more sensitive to speed then load in the bed. As long as I keep it in the sweet RPM spot, it doesn't make a noticable difference +/-. I do have a tendancy to drive faster when the TC isn't on the truck, so sometimes I actually get worse mileage with the truck is empty (but I get there quicker...) I do have a pop-up so less wind resistance I guess.

Our '01 SRW 4x4 F-350 PSD 5 spd was about that. 17 empty and 14 with 9' 10" Lance. MPG with camper would start droping of sharply above 65 mph.

My 01 GMC DM gets 12 with the 26'5er,14.5 with my Lance 8'6" Lite & 16 empty. Thats running at 60-65,try to keep it below 2K rpm. Of course weather cond. can make a big diffrence,as well as elevation...

We get 22.5 MPG empty, with the camper 8.5 ft Northstar Arrow and all our stuff onboard the fuel consumption drops to 18 MPG.

The payload causing the 4.5 MPG drop is about 3100 pounds.

I rarely drive over 60 MPH loaded as the one ton SRW is overloaded by about 1000 pounds and I worry about quick stops.

The camper uses 3 mpg and the boat about 2 mpg. This is for hill driving.

My F450 gets 13 MPG empty, and 11 MPG with camper at 60 MPH. And if I pull my 20 inclosed trailer with camper I get 9 MPG.
