In the latest MotorHome magazine there is an article about what the various manufactures have to do with their engines to meet the government mandated 2010 emissions requirements. They estimated that it could add $10,000 to $15,000 to the cost of a new diesel coach. Navistar is going one way with their diesel and it MAY be less expensive. Most other manufacturers are going with the addition of a Urea tank, that must be kept replenished with DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). This DEF, which must be replenished or your engine will not run, may only be available at truck stops or service centers. I do not know the cost of DEF or how much is used as you drive, but even tho the new engines may get better mileage, your cost per mile could increase.
Since it just came out I cannot find a link to the MotorHome magazine article online. Here is one link that discusses 2010 emissions. This is only a few months away so be prepared if you are looking for a new coach next year. 2010 costs

They just came out with the 'particulate' filter..... things sure are moving fast! Actually, I thought the change was coming in 2012.... the Motorhome article surprised me that it was this soon!

It came out several months ago that 2010 Winnebago DP coaches will no longer have basement ac/heat pump units, but will go back to roof mounted units (which most of us who have the basement units consider to be a serious step backward). The reason given by Winnebago was that the space in the basement currently occupied by the ac/heat pump is needed for the tank required to meet the new emissions requirements.

AutoBlog says a Urea tank fill is supposed to last 10k-15k miles. But I also found that Detroit Diesel says for every 100 gal of diesel you'll need 1 gal of urea. They said they were planning a 4-5 gal urea tank. You would be able to buy 2.6 liter bottles of Urea at truckstops, dealers, parts stores, etc and cost would "mirror the cost of diesel fuel." There apparenly is some kind of warning indicator about 1,000 miles before it must be refilled. Oh, and the article on AutoBlog said, "Before anybody asks, yes - urea is a component of urine, and no - peeing in the tank will not fool the sensors."

Diesel Exhaust Fluid? When will it end? I just paid $200 to the shop to top off my blinker fluid and now the guy says my muffler bearings are shot.

Seriously though, the amount of miles driven by RV's is so low compared to the total vehicle miles driven in this country that the very slight reduction in emissions they hope to gain is not justified by the cost incurred. I'd rather pay a one time "fee" upon purchase that could be pooled and used to clean up far dirtier things. That, or nothing at all.

Is this going to cause the exhaust pipe to have to be put up in the air on the back corner?? Didn't I read that somewhere?? That may be part of the expense??

Gee wonder why no one is buying a new coach. Guess I'll buy a used OTR tractor and have it converted into a super A.

We Love our 2006 Freightliner, and we have owned Trucks with the DPFs, but now we don't have to worry about the DPF system. Just wait until those DPF's start stopping up. And I have read were several have removed the DPF's and some have had issues. I have said many time the DPF system are a waste of Diesel. If we continue to let a few States tell them how to build a Disel engine we better start buying Horses again. Most making the decision's on Diesel engines don't have a clue of what they are doing, and very few have ever owned a Diesel. We do try to conserve energy we tow our Gas burner. GBY....

The Urea will be changed at the same intervals as the engine oil, and it will be available at auto parts stores, WalMart and most retailers in 2 gallon containers, or interstate truck stops dispensed from a "Fuel Pump" type device by the gallon. The bonuses will be clean exhaust, virtually no NOX, and better fuel economy which especially on fleet or owner operated over the road trucks will mean less per mile costs. This is already a reality on some of the new Urea OTR trucks.

Here is an informational website that will explain the SCR process and DEF that will be used for 2010 EPA engines.
