Sounds like the cruise control was on and the fuel filter needed a change...

I don't understand why this truck is dropping in 2nd to pull a 8,500lb trailer up a hill?
The 6.0 is no slouch when it comes to power. Sure, it is connected to a 4 speed, but still?
8,500 is not that big of a trailer for the 6.0 diesel.

You might want to check out "if" your down on power. IMHO it is for some reason?

I totally agree, I never noticed the rig behind me before and still don't until these last few times on the steeper hills. Even if these were long 6 to 7+% grades, the truck seems like it should have pulled it with no problem like it usually does(or did). Never had any problem before. Guess I'll have to take it in and have it checked...oh boy $$$$$$. But thanks for the come back and the info.

Well..it was definately not in cruise control because I never use that when towing. But would you think the fuel filter would need changing at less than 24,000 miles. I take it to the dealer for regular services and they, (other than screw me on the prices), haven't mentioned anything about a fuel filter chang yet. Probably don't even check it. So maybe I'll have it checked by someone else or just have it changed for good measure and see what happens.

Thanks alot for the feed back.....gives me another area to to survey before the next trip.

First thing; change the fuel filter. When a diesel is down on power, fuel supply is the fist place to look.

FYI: 24K is a ton of miles on a diesel fuel filter, clean fuel or not.

OK...Many thanks again, that's really good to know. So, I guess I know what I have to do this week.
How often would you suggest that I change the fuel filter ?
This is is my first diesel truck.....any other good tips to keep it on the road?

No problem.
I don't own a 6.0 so I can't comment on how often to change out the fuel filter. A lot of people use 10K though.

My D-max has a computer to tell me when to change it out so I follow it. It goes off about every 15K. I get my fuel in bulk and know the fuel that goes in my truck is clean unlike if I got it at a station.

It's best to get a manual and follow it. If you don't have one, get one.

Good luck, and let us know how things go so we can all learn.

I change the fuel filter at about 12,000 miles on my Cummins if that helps. I agree 24K is too long.

Hi..It's me again. Well I have to say "I'm sorry" because I gave some wrong information to you. About the fuel filters, I went back and checked my records on the truck and found out that they were changed at 15,000. So I guess I only have around 9,000 on these. Have taken a trip to Arizona and Utah...also one to Oregon since they were changed. Would you think I might have picked up some dirty fuel somewhere along the way and fouled up the new filters? Actually the first time I noticed this problem was on a hill going into Arizona the week after they were changed. I usually only use Shell or 76 fuel in it from high volume stations. Don't mean to make this problem more confusing but I thought I better let you know this. I still really thank you all for the quick and helpful responses.
And, again, sorry for the mis-information.

Did you have them changed by Ford. Pulling a 5er they need to be changed every 10,000mi and use only Ford filters.

Fuel filters are a weird duck. They can last 50K or 15 miles depending on how clean the fuel you buy is.

It's best to buy an new one and slap it in if your loosing power. That way you can rule out that part of it.
Any spec, filter will work. They don't have to be a Ford filter. Just make sure they meet ford spec's and you will be fine.

Another area you can check is the airfilter. Diesels run on lots of air!!! Make sure the air filter is clean.

A friend had a 3208 Cat and it was low on power. He checked the air filter and it was clogged up. The filter was as big as a small trash can so even filters as big as that can get clogged up.

Those are the easy fixes. If you don't get the power back with those two fixes then about the only other thing to do is take it to the shop and see what they say.

With a 6.0 it can be a lot of things. IP, or EGR or tons of other things.

Good luck.
