Creeper,

How can you group all the laprops into one group?

They all have a different purpose.

In my house, I have 3 desktop PC's, that I built myself, on a network.

Plus a Acer Apire-One netbook, that works very well on the wireless router.

We use it at all the campgrounds, and log on to the internet.

I wouldn't want to use a netbook for any long period of time, but for $300 bucks, it's a bargin!

So what is your point?

I know some people use laptops for their main home computer, but even the 17" screen is to small for me(IMO).

In the living room, I have a 50" Panasonic plasma, that doubles as a computer monitor(typing on it now), and in my den, a Samsung 24" monitor, both are a pleasure on the eyes.

A laptop is a waste of money, unless you need the mobility, and even then, can't really be updated.

It's a vicious cycle with laptops, having to be replaced every 3 years or so, where as a desktop, can be updated, by replacing video cards, ram, for a fraction of the cost.

Saying that, you could easily get 5>6 years, for the fraction of the cost of one higher end PC or Mac laptop! Once again, IMO

A three year refresh cycle may be the norm in a business environment to coincide with the three year warranty that is also the norm on business laptops, but for personal use it is absurd.

My last laptop is over ten years old now, running W2K and is still functioning as my main email and general surfing PC on my desk.

I only got a new laptop last year after the last battery pack for the old laptop died and the cost of replacing it was too close to the cost of a new laptop, so the old is just a dedicated silent desktop now.

Could it be that "someone" owns stock in a certain company?
This thread sounds like a commercial for "THAT" company.

Yes, I'm aware of hacked Mac-PCs, my prediction is/was for an official Apple "open" release to run on any generic PC hardware followed by the gradual elimination of Apple computer hardware offerings.

As for me, I won't be running Mac anything now or in the future as I can't stand the UI. I didn't like the UI when it first appeared on the Lisa way back when either.

I have at various points run Linux and other Unix type OSes, however none have managed to convince me that they offered any advantage over Windows for my normal desktop / laptop PC uses.

Apple would have to change their business model. They profess to be a computer manufacturer; they create software to help them sell hardware. If that is a ture representation, why would they let others use their operating system to drive computer sells.

I actually didn't put them in one group. I grouped them by price ranges and netbooks were all by themselves. I'm not saying that netbooks don't work for people. I find them unusable for me. You also found something I did , which was not being able to use them all the time.

I totally agree and that's the reason I didn't go into specs etc... One of those 17", 12lb laptops can be used for someone home computer, but I don't see the point then.

The point was if I could find a PC that I would be happy the $300-400 dollar range and that answer is NO, but was there a PC I could be happy with? The answer was CLEARLY as stated, YES.

But, I ended up in the 800 dollar plus range. Could I be happy with something in the range yes, but then it comes down to if the paying a 100 dollar or so more worth it for the MAC. Would I be willing to pay extra features..

I heard Jim saying that. Since this is generally not true for Mac Laptops then it brings in the cost of ownership issue.

Just because I listed something a compromise buy for me, doesn't mean it's a compromise for someone else as they might no care of they things that concern me. Clearly there is a compromise from level to level. THe computer makers need to cut corners somewhere to make a laptop for $300...

It's kinda like cars, some people don't have a problem driving a Dodge Neon because it gets the job done. I'd rather chew on glass then drive one ever again.

Yes I own stock in Microsoft, I don't believe I mentioned them... Again, please pay attention the Windows vs OS X has been beaten to death. CLEARLY not what this is about.
