I use them, but I am in the standby reserves. Some are also open to DoD civilans and retirees. I have not encountered any that are open to veterans who are not on reserve or retired status. If you would like to research it, check out http://old.armymwr.com/portal/travel/paths/

Absolutely correct.... I'm a vet, but not retired, disabled, or in the guard. I do miss using the military campgrounds, but I wouldn't re-elist just so I could use them. At 55 years old now, I don't think I could keep pace with those young whipper-snapper 18 year old kids doing PT! But, put me in a fox hole and I can probably sleep like a baby!

Using military campgrounds never entered my mind as a factor to stay in the military more than 20 years. I wanted another check every month and health benefits for life. I have many friends who pay $700 - $900 a month for thier health insurance. I pay $98 a month which pays my co-pays & deductibles...TriCare covers 95% of everything. So having a benefit of using a campground never entered my mind in staying in and being a retired military vet.

Monty-Rob, most military campgrounds are actually RUN AND OPERATED by the Commanding Officer of the respective post. Many will allow vets to use the military campgrounds on a "as needed or as available" use. Instead of taking the position you cannot, do yourself a favor and call the bases you are interested in and ask the proper authority. You and others might be surprised at the answers you receive. It doesn't cost to ask, only not to.

I checked to see if I as a Navy Vet could use Military CG's and found out they are only for Active, Retired or Disabled Vets.

I also noted the $ charged for these CG's seemed to compair to some private run CG's.

I think the best deal going for seniors 62 & over (I am 70)is the Golden Age Pass (or whatever they call it now, I've had mine for 8 yrs now)and staying at National Parks or Core of Engineers. We have been in some very nice COE parks. With the senior psss, half price.
You can't beat that.

I'll have to disagree with the price...we've stayed and many military campgrounds and pay $12-$16 a night for full hookups...where private campgrounds average $24-$40 a night. In fact where we are right now in AZ, the nightly cost is $46 a night and it's a private campground. Better security at a military campground...we stay at Nellis AFB, LAs Vegas, close to the strip, no worry of beggars, homeless or having something ripped off and it's $15 a night water/elec.

There might be some who allow vets (non-retirees, non 100% disabled, etc) but they're very few. At least one use to allow anyone from the public. Pine View campground at Ft McCoy WI was open to the public. A full hook up with cable TV was $25/night for authorized military (Active, National Guard, Reservists, Retired, 100% DAV, DoD Civilians) and $45 for the public. There were times in the summer there were so many non-military in the place that there was no room for military. For public use, which means everyone not active, NG, Res, Retired, 100% DAV, or DOD civilian, the access has to be determined to be a benefit to the military to grant access. Military members can usually sponsor a civilian but the guidelines usually require the military member to be present when the civilian is using the facilities.
DOD Instructions 1015.10 sets out guidance of who is authorized access to military campgrounds.
Basically it boils down to if you have an ID card where you are allowed access to other MWR facilities then you'll have access to the campground.
For more info for those who are affected go to:
Military Campgrounds
Larry runs a great site that is very helpful.
As JoeGood wrote the prices at milcamps are usually quite a bit cheaper than public campgrounds. I think the most expensive milcamp we've stayed at was $19/night at Ellsworth AFB, SD. Not going to find any campgrounds in the Rapid City area with full hook ups and as nice for anywhere close to $19. IIRC the last time we stayed at Sigbee in Key West it was $17 or $18. Sure can't find any campground on Key West for anywhere close to that price and Sigbee has full hook ups.

I am a 30 year retired Matine Corps, we stay at Mil. camp grounds as much as possible, I do not agree that priv. camp grounds have the same rates, McDill AFB Tamps Fla. was last year $16. full hookup & cable, out side you can't get one for $45 or more.
