My brother and his siblings got to stay in Post Recreation quarters in HI when his son was stationed there.
My brother and I stayed at Ft Hood for a week, before my nephew went to Bosnia and again before he went to Iraq. My brother fm VT is not a vet, was fm CA, we met in TX and they let us both stay. It never hurts to ask, and if they say no, well you just stay where you would have anyway.
It may have helped because he was the Youngest SFC in the US Army or rated the Best Technical Inspector of Helicopters and had arranged for Tracy Bird (his commanders favorite country star) to put on a show for the base before they left for Iraq... He also almost got him for one in Bosnia, but the time line did not work out.

I don't know if this is correct or not but some of the military campgrounds do allow camping if there is a "sponsorship" from an active duty individual. My SIL drives a C-17 out of Elmandorff in Anchorage and I was under the impression that if he sponsored me, I could stay at the military campground there.
I think I read that in the rules for that campground.

Yes, a person authorized to use facilities can sponsor a non- authorized person.

True, many allow sponsorship but many also require the sponsor to be there camped at the same time. Many have time of year restrictions on sponsored guests.

Also a lot of Military campgrounds allow civilians workers(GS) to use the campgrounds. Usually there is a difference in price.

Yes, DOD employees can use the military campgrounds. The cost is determined on whther they are on duty or vacationing. This is only for DOD civilians and not all federal civil service. They must have a valid DOD ID card.

Amen - we are actually headed to Onslow Beach at Camp LeJeune = $15 per night with full hooks, CATV and WiFi. Now where can you get that kind of rate at a private run campground? NOT! Usually at least $40 per night. We stay at military ones often = safe, clean, no noise or usavory types. We always meet some great fellow retirees. It's one of the best perks of being retired military (aside from the medical benefits).
