The 9.5 14 bolt axle has only 80 lbs lighter GAWR than the 14 bolt 10.5. It is a SF but it has a higher GAWR than the 1500 axle which is only 8.5 10 bolt.
The GAWR Chevy lists for the trucks is not the actual axle capacity, it is the whole truck, including tires/wheels and springs. The 10.5" 14-bolt axle is a 10K lb axle. The semi-float axles are rated quite a bit less (6K and under).

I have the light duty 2500. I priced an axle from a junk yard for the 10.5 FF and they wanted $900 to $1,600 depending on use and the more expensive were rebuilt. But none had the 4.56 only the 4.10 and 3.73. If I could find a FF axle and leafs with the 4.56 gear for under a grand I would get it rather than change gears.
That would be the best solution, provided the axle comes from a single rear wheel pickup, not a dually or a chassis-cab, as the axle and frame widths are different on those trucks. Dually axle is wider, chassis-cab frame is narrower.

I had one junkyard locator said he found one for me but it was from a 2000 3500 SRW to get the 4.56 gear. I told him to find out if it had drum or disc brake. I have to have the disc brake and I need it with the calipers because the rotors are going to be a little different than mine.

If you're swapping the whole axle, keep the brakes with the axle. You can adjust the proportioning valve or change the master cylinder to use whatever brakes are on the 3500 axle. The 3500 truck may have Hydroboost, which you may want to swap over to your truck along with the master cyl.

I have the hydroboost on my 2500. That was a stipulation when I was looking at the 2500 and the 2500HD. The difference I seen was full floating axle on the HD and the 2500 had the semi floating 9.5". Both had the same 8 lug. The frame was the sam upto the rear axle and then it got smaller to the rear. The frame thickness I think is slightly smaller on the 2500. The towing weight though was 300 lbs higher on the 2500 than the 2500HD. Probably from the 300 lbs heavier truck on the HD. The 2500 sat 3" lower too. The 2500 sat at the same height as my 97 Z-71 with 33" tires. The 2500HD in a 4x2 was still higher than my Z-71.

Interesting that they would bother putting Hydroboost on a truck with a semi-float rear axle and corresponding low GVWR/GAWR. Hydroboost used to only come on duallies and medium duty commercial chassis trucks (3500HD). My old Chevy dually had the Hydroboost with a Dana 70 and big drums. Brakes worked great on that truck.

Because it had a higher towing weight and same GCWR as the 2500HD and maybe the 3500HD with the 6.0L. Those brakes really work great. I had a few scary panic brake stops with the camper hitched up. Those brakes combined with trailer brakes have surprised me how short it can stop in an emergency. My old 1500 with the 30 ft TT was scary. I got pushed by the TT on wet pavement through a 4-way stop. There was no warning (stop ahead sign) and the intersection was just over a hill top where you couldn't see it and it was a 2 lane 55mph road. I crested the hill and there was a stop sign. I braked as hard as I could and the 1500 brakes that were vacuum boosted just couldn't grab enough. The TT brakes were locked and the truck had ABS and I just slid right through the intersection. Lucky no one was at the intersection.

That would be enough to scare anyone into a bigger truck! Glad it came out ok for you!

I was glad the TT stayed behind me on that attempt to stop. I can only imagine how many people run through that 4-way. If you don't know the road you don't know the stop sign is there until you crest a hill and it is a quick drop to the intersection there is no way you can see that stop sign until you cerst the hill because the hill hides it completely.
