The tire kid was just misinformed, I think. Since the tire shaving cost $15, I don't think he was trying to screw me over.

Thanks for the confirmation of what I thought was correct.

This is only an issue for pseudo all wheel drive systems like the Ford Explorer and Honda CRV. They have a computer controlled electric clutch in the transfer case. If tire sizes miss-match, the computer will think a tire is slipping and engage the clutch a bit... for a while until the clutch in the T-case burns up.

Pickups from all three domestic brands have a true transfer case that's either locked up or free wheeling. The tire size difference doesn't matter.

So you're saying my big four domestic truck with oriental ancestry doesn't have a true transfer case?

I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life!!! Say you have 40,000 miles on your tires and you have a flat and a spare tire that has never been on the ground? Can't use the new spare?

Different brands of tires, although stamped the same size can be off more than that. I ran 33" Super Swampers on my last Jeep in summer. I wanted studs for winter so got Dean 12.5 X 33, the same as the SS. They were 1 1/2" shorter!!! So I switched to Dean 35" which were about 1/4" taller than the SS.

The only time it is important to keep tire size/tread the same is on a set of duallies!!!

I had the exact same thing happen to me, 08 Chev Silverado 3500. A blowout on a rear tire in Canada. The tire shop there wanted me to buy a another tire to match the blowout tire because of the difference in diameter. I discovered that the spare tire is a smaller size (16"?) than the regular tires so I couldn't rotate or swap tires with the spare. Apparently that's a typical trick the manufacturers use to keep the price and weight down. I was told that if I didn't put on the same size tires on left and right rear, that it would wreck the differential and void the warranty. What this means is that each time you get a rear blowout you would have to buy TWO new tires. Bull!

I checked with a Chevy garage and they said that it was OK to run different size tires. Several other shops confirmed that it is no problem.
I didn't put on a another new tire and won't shave the replacement tire.

The guy that recommends this also frequents forums with zanny ideas or outright lies... with no idea what he is talking about.

This makes it hard for the truth bearers to get honest ideas out.

Of course we don't have that probblem on the TC forum do we?

I do not have much experience with TC's but I do off road a lot.
we have situations when spares are differnets sizes a lot.
when in doubt put the differet size tire on the front and make sure your hubs are unlocked if you have 4x4. But if you have a newer rig with auto 4x4 or all wheel drive then this will not matter. ABS takes more then 1/4 of an inch to ingauge. if you are conserved with this when you get a new tire you could put it on the front and that will not be a problem.
