I tow a light 5er with a 06 F150 SCAB with 6.5' bed; the 5er has an extended pin box which helps with clerance. There are a few light 5er's out there that are good matches for a 150/1500 (properly equipped) truck. The problem with short bed is turning clearance. I have a slider, and don't often use it, but its there (I don't think there is any time I couldn't have actually managed without it). If the trailer had an extended pin box you could probably manage with a standard slider, others have mentioned superglide with an extended slide(I think they're pretty expensive). If you have an extended pin box, the extension can cause damage to your tailgate when slider is moved back, so you may need to remove tail-gate or get V cut gate (I don't think I have to tell you how I know this). Also measure the height of the truck walls verses the height that the 5er is when level, the F150's after about 04 are pretty high. Of course you must check pin weight and towing capacity; with a 5er, pin weight is going to be the limiting factor.
Good Luck,
Doug

No No NO not a 5th wheel
Bed is too short for clearance and pin has to be just ahead of rear axle.

Within the weight ratings of the truck why not?

Snow Hawk here. Thanks to all of you for responding and as usual the RV.net community offers some good information. Your feedback is not a surprise and for those towing with a 1/2 I'm sure with the right set up and the right camper it could work just fine. But with my freind's 5.5 bed it appears likely too short to make it work. If they can find a fiver small and light enough it is likely they will have very few floorplan options and will have to make concessions they won't have to make with a travel trailer. I understand the truck towing issues as I have a 38 foot Montana Mountaineer and tow with a f350 srw 6.0 diesel. In the end, you need the right truck for the weight and ten some, to do it safely and over the long term. Thanks again and we just watned to ask the question.

While at Cedar Point (OH) campground last week, I saw the exact truck you refer to (F150 CC with the really short bed) pulling what appeared to be a 33' or so Keystone Laredo. I glanced in the back of the bed and the hitch seemed to be mounted quite far forward. I did not talk to the owner, and have no idea how it towed. But there can be no question, he was far, far in excess of the capacity of that truck. Especially once he loaded in the large family staying in the rig.

Don't be so sure, there are those on here that tell of F-150's with enormous carrying capacities. I am just kidding around and know that some F-150's have enough capacity to tow some fifth wheel trailers.

I have owned a light fifth wheel that I towed with a F-150 with no problems at all. The crew cab F-150 has a bed that is far too short to use for fifth wheel towing, not to mention the extra weight the 4 door adds to the base vehicle. Just my opinion, others will disagree I am sure.

I saw a guy with a long bed F150 and a 30+ foot 5er. I bet his high beams hit the moon. It was in Texas and he had out of state tags so he had been doing it for a while. Never say can't, just say shouldn't.
