dubdub - you may be an expert at safety risk analysis but we are not.

Can you detail how you quantify the risk factor based on any particular configuration?

Further, once quantiifed, how do you decide at what threshold that risk factor is too high?

Item 1 - Correct

Item 2- If its a F-150 don't even think of hooking up a 5th wheeler.

Item 3- When the wheels fall off of the F-150, the sky turns purple and the wind is from a south eastern direction and smells like eggs.

Again, the OP was talking about a 5th wheel that would work within the ratings of the truck in question, not a transport truck box.

My concern is once I pick a 5th wheel for my F150 is the amount of power I have (5.4 V8). So I have to ensure I am well bellow the max tow limits of my F-150. I am not sure if I can find a 5th wheel with the configuration I require within these peramiters. I guess the question is it worth me buying a 6000lb travel trailer as to a 7,000-8,000 lbs 5th wheel? Is a fifth wheel worth the extra 2000 lbs of towing for the same set up?

Now you are getting there. I have owned and towed with three late model Ford 5.4 V-8's. (1-2003 and 2-2005's) Pulling a 4,500 pound travel trailer was fun with downshifts to second gear only in the mountains out west. Pulling a 6,000 pound travel trailer was okay for my trips from Illinois to Florida and Texas. Towing a 8,000 pound travel trailer convinced me to trade back down to 6,000 pounds or run in second gear at every hill I encountered. Rear axle ratios were either 3.73 or 4.10

30 feet and a $3000 hitch is my real issue. That is long and costly...DW likes it though (28R). Damn...this is a difficult situation. I would definetley go with a Henseley on this unit.

TomG2 post some pics of rig.....

My old 260 hp (4.10 gear) runs mostly in 3rd gear with cruise control pulling over 7000 pounds just dandy. I can not imagine why a newer 300hp F150 would be downshifting all over the place even with 8000 pounds.

The old 260 HP had better torque numbers lower in the RPM range than the newer ones. I tried three of them, as noted, and all were overloaded beyond 6,000 pounds. My performance standards may be higher than others but the 2005 F-150 really disappointed. The other 2005 was a F-250 with a 4.10 axle ratio which eliminated some downshifting as did locking out overdrive. Hang a 8,000 pound plus fifth wheel with the additional frontal area behind a 5.4 and look for a gas station because you will spend a lot of time in the lower gears. That is why they make V-10's and diesels.

Have the dealer roll the price of the hitch into the trailer loan to ease the sticker shock a bit.
