Have been searching for a viable alternative to the Class C/B+/B configs and found the Tiger Motorhomes

Does anyone here own one? If so I have some questions from an owner (don't care much for talking to sales people, I like grassroots knowledge on my vehicles).

  1. Fuel economy-What's your mpg?
  2. Quality of construction?
  3. Virtues and vices of this type of camper?

Thanks much for any info you can provide.

Jeet yet?

If you search here, I'm sure you'll find the guy who likes to post about his. Then, send him a pm. I'm pretty sure he'll answer you since he seems to love posting about his.

I don't own one, but my good friend owns a Full Size Tiger on a Chevy 4x4. He bought new in 03 when Tiger Pro Van was here in Colorado. Dave (the owner) was very good to work with and warranty issues. I looked at them, but decided on a TC and 4x4 Truck.
1.Good: His Tiger has held up surprisingly well. His is a pop-up with extended height (he is over 6-2)
-The layout is great and seems very roomy
-4x4 versatility and fairly good gas mileage
-Very well constructed
2. Bad
-In his case, the pop-up is manual and takes a lot of effort to raise. Must remove all items on roof rack to raise.
-Many problems with his rear wheels (Tiger Pro Van were making their own wheels)
-Small details that were not well thought out (i.e. his Fresh water drain is right over parts of his bumper that is totally rusted out)
-Expensive now

I am not sure if you are looking at the small version on compact van chassis, or Full size. I think they only make the hard side now. If you've got the money, they are a great RV with 4x4 capability. Like any B or C, you cannot use the vehicle for any thing else than as a RV. That's why I went with a TC wihich is more versatile. My last Hallmark with the power roof also made it easy to use with gear on top also.

Magnus,

You'll get the kind of Tiger info you want by joining the owners' group at http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/tigermotorhomeowners/. The site even has a database of used Tigers for sale.

Some answers from me (26,000 miles, camping about 2-3 months per year, see more info on my Tiger in signature):

1. Fuel economy-What's your mpg?
about 11-12 overall on regular unleaded

2. Quality of construction?
OK. Nothing has broken or fallen off so far. My Tiger spends a lot of time on dirt USFS roads.

3. Virtues and vices of this type of camper?

Note here that not all Tigers are 4WD regular cab like mine.

Virtues: Perfect size for me and my gear. Good amount of storage space. High clearance 4WD gets me to trailheads. Tanks, both fresh and waste, are more than sufficient for the multiple day off-grid trips I like. Ditto 2 coach batteries (I ordered my Tiger w/o generator). Lower center of gravity than the typical TC. Smaller than the typical TC - only 87" wide, just over 9' tall (mine does not have roof A/C). (my pre-Tiger 4WD was even smaller). Fits into one regular parking space and into the small RV space at my house. 400 mile cruising range. Great turning radius. I only had to shop for one item, not both truck and TC.

Vices: How many people and pets do you want to haul? Where to you want to drive? Camp? Store it? How tall are you? Plus, it's an RV and some of the national parks prohibit all RV's from certain areas; I'm OK with prohibiting by size or saying no generators, but all RV's...don't even get me going on this!

I'm a longtime owner (since 1991) of small 4WD RV's, so my answers are undoubtedly biased.

on edit: Van pop-up no longer made due to inavailability of Chevy Astro. My Tiger is a Chevy Silverado 2500HD; CX's are now built on either Chevy 3500HD or Ford F350.

Hope this helps!

Tiger4x4RV, who hangs out here because I camp like a TC (sorry, Sleepy)

A neat way of advertising.. are you a dealer or manufacturer?

No, just a TT owner looking to go with a different config. Am new to this forum and since the Tiger is really just a modified TC so to speak (or perhaps hybrid) thought I would get more here since we cannot post the same question in multiple forums.

It's a shame dealers/manuf have jaded your experience of this forum.

NOT a modified TC. A small C. Most C's used to be this small.

Confusing, yes? Not having been in the market for long I have noticed it's nearly impossible to sort out the various classes of motorhomes with any consistency.

When I cam across mention of the Tiger in another URL, there did not seem to be any classification of it noted. It strongly resembles a TC so I made a stab at posting here.

I appreciate the helpful and charitable answers for this newbie.

this will have a lot of the questions that you have answered in this thread.

Since there are at least three late-model Tiger CX owners now active on RV.net, I thought it might be a good idea to open a Tiger thread. MSN has killed their 'Groups', including the Tiger owners' group. Their suggested move to 'Multiply' has not worked out at all well.

While we're at it, the Tiger CX is also not a B. It is built on a truck chassis, not a van. You are correct that it is nearly impossible to sort this stuff out because sometimes even the manufacturers call it incorrectly or they put all the words on their website so that search engines will pick them up and entice possible buyers, such as yourself, into their market.
