An effective firewall is, as others have said, a must when you are out from behind your router. I use Windows firewall, but there are a number of other effective ones as well.

If you want on eof the most secured things for online banking, ourchases, etc. get yourself an aircard that plugs into the USB port on your laptop...

Never said it gave end-to-end security...but it does give an extra layer of security
However you get on the web,whether it be public wireless or aircard, is your choice...but when doing online banking I prefer the added layer of security of the aircard (versus public wireless)...most banks, credit unions, etc. have the encrypted websites so that will always be there...
