Sounds like your real close on a purchase. I would be asking myself, which truck do I feel more comfortable with. The first truck my brain comes up with... would be the one to buy, and forget the stress of it all. JMO.

Hi everybody,
just thought I'd update on where it all went. At the last minute, aesthetics entered into the picture as I made the mistake (?) of involving my family in the final decision. (just kidding, not a mistake, I'm glad I did.)

The previous two vehicles were ruled out (a) because the Texas truck was a Ram 3500 SRW with cab lights. Apparently the three women I live with do not like cab lights.

and (b) the Pennsy truck was a little too rigid on asking price, but more importantly the color of the truck was maroon. I am red-green deficient color blind, so I never noticed But apparently the three women I live with do not like maroon-colored trucks.

Back to the drawing board. My wife, finally energized to enter the search, spent just as much time on the internet as I did this week, and she got a good sense overall of price, condition, mileage, and options.

It turns out that what the three women I live with DO like in a pickup truck is leather seats. Not the full Laramie package, necessarily, just the seats. (Although my kids loved the idea of a built-in DVD player.)

So this morning we pulled the trigger on a Georgia truck, 34,000 miles, $28,000, leather seats, nice condition. No cab lights, blue. Sight unseen, so a little nervous, but hopefully this will end up proving to be a good decision. Wish us luck.

Thanks again to all of you for your involvement and very thoughtful input.

Jim

Same as above, 2006 Ram 2500 SLT mega cab with the 5.9L engine, 4x4, tow package. (I'm guessing the leather seats were likely ordered originally from the factory as an option?) The mileage in the 30s is kind of what did it for me.

Congrats on the truck! Post some pics when you are ready. As for the leather seats... Dodge has a slip-on OEM Leather seat that may have taken the place of the "Laramie Leather". The Dodge dealership tried to sell me them when I was looking, but you never know.

thanks everybody, we'll see how it goes. Al B's comment made me go back and look at the pictures more closely, if those are slip covers, they must be really good ones (the OEM leather covers online are close to $1000 for front and back seats, so if that's what they are, the first owner spent some dollars on them). again, we'll see when it shows up! haven't decided whether we'll ship it or fly to GA to drive it back.

Now I'm going to have other questions, so maybe I should start a new thread. But going from my Ford which has nearly 200k miles and still runs great to the Ram which I know has the better engine but possibly a weaker front suspension--has anyone had to deal with early ball joint replacement, steering issues, and the like? I have been mentally prepared for this possibility with the "new" Dodge, but what reading I've done suggests that it would be best to upgrade once and for all with better components than go with replacement parts. A mechanic friend of mine talks about the ball joints in particular with these Dodges, and I've read about Dynatrac and/or Carli ball joints being the way to go if you can afford them.

Any thoughts on any of this? as a new-Ram-owner-to-be I'm just trying to anticipate some of the things I may want to do over the winter before towing starts up again next April.

thanks again everyone, you'll all been great and very helpful. I'll post pictures when we get the truck.

Nothing wrong with the front end in an 06 Megacab. Especially at 34K.

Anything will wear out eventually (well, except a 5.9L Cummins ), but I wouldn't worry at that low mileage. I have 84K on mine with all original front end parts.
