While inspecting my tires last week I noticed, what appeared to be shock mounts on the frame. Is there any advantage to installing shocks, such as better handling or less "wear and tear" on the trailer?

Likewise, I bought my rig and later discovered it had brackets for shocks. It took a couple trips to decided shocks would be a good investment to control the bounce across expansion joints and road patches. I installed my own, if you have a bottle jack and wrench it's easy. I think shocks give a better ride and control. Folks at stengelbros.com were helpful.

Ditto for me....The shock mounts were there so why not install the shocks that should have been there in the first place!....WHAT A DIFFERENCE THEY MADE!!! Best investment ever for so little money.

I have always wondered about this. I hate how much my camper bounces when you come off a bridge and hit the little bump. I have white knuckles every time.
NewRV5ver, Mydazeoff - I noticed both of you have Jayco's. Do you know if all Jayco's have mounting plates for shocks? I have a Jayco Super Lite and would love to get shocks.

If mine had mounts ready to go I would put some shocks on it.

I was talking RVs with a Canadian friend who brings his 05-06 30' Sandpiper down every year. We were talking frames, tires and axles based on my reading here. He said the only problem he's had was when he was driving on a good road in the wilds of Alberta when he hit a =very= rough RR xing at about 60 mph. He was concerned enough that he stopped to check things out. He noticed that the spring mount bolts had ripped right out of the shackles and that the shackles had been very worn. He's got a =lot= of miles on the rig already and, after talking to the tech at his local dealer, has decided that the bolts and bushings will be replaced every 10,000 miles. A friend, who has a much larger rig, is replacing his bolts and bushings every year. We were also talking Lippert frames; none of the many other RV owners he associates with have had major frame problems that he knows about. As I'll be seeing many of them in the next few months, I'll be talking to them directly.

I have had them both ways and really can't say tha I could tell a diference.
If the mounts were there I would put them on just for the hey of it.

I've owned 5er's without shocks and the last two I've owned came with shocks. Seems the 5er tows a little "smoother" with shocks as opposed to without. I would think they would take a little stress out of the frame when bouncing along on a rough road, just my thoughts, nothing of fact to back it with....

Will shocks help? Remove the rear shocks from your car or pickup. Drive it for 50 miles or so and you may have an answer to your question. Make sure you go across some rough areas such as a railroad crossing.

mfoster711, I don't no if Jayco has brackets on all models. It's easy to check. Crawl under you rig at the axles and look for a bracket welded to the main beam with a hole in it. Next check the steel plate that bolts the spring to the axle, look for a extra hole in it. If you can't find those items then you might want to check www.monroeheavyduty.com and select "retrofit kit" for other ways to mount shocks on your trailer.
