I want to replace the original carpeting in my 1998 Coachman Leprachon Class C. Does anyone know what the flooring is under the carpeting in these RVs? I would like to have an idea before I rip out the present carpeting. I want to use linoleum tile if the flooring is smooth. If not, I'll need to replace with carpeting. Or, should I just leave the present carpeting alone and deal with it? I know the bathroom will be a challenge because of the box-in affect with the toilet.

It will depend on the manufacturer as to what is underneath. My Fleetwood had just the felt beneath the carpet. Nothing else. I sanded the 3/4" plywood down after I ripped up the carpet and then used stick tiles. (Didn't want to have the hassle of cutting those little oddball multiple corners in my twin bed rear) These stick tiles are holding up very well after over a year so far.

I replaced the carpet in my '83 Lep with Allure vinyl flooring. Under the carpet and pad there was just flakeboard flooring. I painted it with waterproof primer then laid the vinyl flooring on top. Looks great, though there are a few areas that are not 100% flat (carpet hides this better). Around the toilet box I just went with stained wood when I rebuilt the box.

Ripsnort, that looks so good. I love the tone. Looks like tile. Nice job. I did Allure and it worked well too. Haven't tackled bedroom but from wife noises I think that is on the list. I think I will be gluing on the vertical section where they boxed in mechanicals, pipes etc.

Thks GC. I want to tackle the front of the cabin but I'm dredding the thousands of staples that remain when tearing up the carpet. I swear the installer got paid by the staple when they put the carpet down.
Incidently, we use throw rugs on the tile, to keep the tootsies warm when getting up on cold mornings!

Rip, I hear you on the staples. A hard surface instead of carpet in front would be very different but sure easy to maintain. I installed an underlayment over the sub floor. It is the quiet walk type. Comes in rolls and you tape seams and staple down in a few places. It provided substantial insulation, acted as sound barrier, and is very soft so I haven't needed the rugs but think this winter in Vancouver for the Oympics a rug or two will be a good idea. We camped in early Oct with temps down to 20 at night with snow on the ground and it was fine. I would strongly recommend the floor underlayment for any floating floor but of course with the glue down probably not.

When I removed the carpeting in my Coachman freedom, There was thin foam padding on top of plywood.
Not too many staples.

I replaced my carpeting about two years ago. Underneath it had a thin foam pad with a stable every quater inch on top of plywood. I was there a full day getting the staples out. A few weeks ago I ripped the new carpeting out (collected to much dirt) and put down pergo flooring. It's a lot eaiser to clean.

I went to local carpet store. Picked out linoleum, they did the work very cheap, even pulling up toilet to replace carpeting in bathroom. Well worth the price.
